Jennifer Lawrence & Robert Pattinson’s Twisted Love Story In 78% Psychology Thriller Revealed In First Trailer

The trailer for Die, My Love has arrived. The movie, which is based on the 2012 Spanish-language novel by Ariana Harwicz that was originally тιтled Matate, amor, was directed by Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here) and stars Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence opposite The Batman star Robert Pattinson.

The movie follows Grace (Lawrence) and Jackson (Pattinson), a couple who moves to Montana, where Grace begins psychologically unraveling as they attempt to handle the move, their marriage, and being new parents. Die, My Love reviews have been solid, with early reactions out of its Cannes premiere earning it a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score as of the time of writing.

MUBI has now released the official trailer for Die, My Love. The teaser is only one minute long, but it packs quite a punch in spite of its brevity. It begins cheerfully, however. “The Clapping Song” by Shirley Ellis plays over sH๏τs of Grace and Jackson pretending to be animals, making love, and generally having a good time.

About halfway through, things take a turn. The song turns into an ominous slow clap as Grace’s face falls and she bends forward. The imagery then turns increasingly sinister, depicting the couple fighting, Grace licking a window, someone carrying a knife through a field, and more. Below, watch the full trailer for the movie, which premieres on November 7:

What This Means For Die, My Love

Although this teaser only offers a brief glimpse at the Jennifer Lawrence movie, it does offer some insight into its tone. While the тιтle and premise of Die, My Love have long implied that the movie will have disturbing undertones, it seems that the movie will have prominent moments that tip closer to horror than straightforward psychological drama.

In addition to starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, Die, My Love features LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.

This type of storytelling isn’t uncommon for Lynne Ramsay. While her movies often inhabit realistic worlds with no supernatural elements, they often present their stories in horrifying or disorienting ways.

This is especially the case for her 2011 drama We Need to Talk About Kevin, which followed a mother (Tilda Swinton) having her emotional disconnect from her son (Ezra Miller) grow more and more terrifying as he develops into a sociopathic teen.

Overall, the trailer makes it seem like Die, My Love will deliver two powerhouse performances from its well-known stars. In addition to continuing to cement Lawrence’s versatility, it joins many recent Robert Pattinson movies (including The Lighthouse and The Boy and the Heron) as a showcase for the former Twilight star’s willingness to go the distance with a performance.
