Ryan Reynolds Finally Addresses Avengers: Doomsday Rumor Following RDJ Feud Reports

Ryan Reynolds sets the record straight about whether ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday. 2024 opened the door for Wade Wilson into the MCU timeline, following the X-Men movie rights now being under Marvel Studios’ control, as the Merc with a Mouth returned to the big screen.

Following the end of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, the fate of the iconic mutants still has yet to be fully revealed, while the Avengers: Doomsday cast is currently working on the Phase 6 installment. Despite multiple X-Men characters being confirmed for the December 2026 entry, there are still many others whose involvement audience members are wondering about.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds, who has been heavily reported to be back for the upcoming team-up movie, finally broke his silence after numerous rumors. When asked if there would be similar Easter eggs in the next Avengers installment, like his upcoming produced documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, the 48-year-old star responded:

There’s four that I’ve got in there. Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one.

In a separate interview with Collider, the Canadian Marvel veteran was also asked to clarify what his mysterious Avengers social media post was all about, which sparked the initial theories that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool would return in 2026. Thankfully, the actor gave an extensive explanation, while also discussing the future of his comic book gig:

The thing I posted on social, that is actually a variant of the flag that we use in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine. It was my favorite. For some reason, you watch a movie later that has that many alts and all that stuff, and you go, “Why didn’t I choose that one? There were five other great jokes for that.” That’s how it works, and that was just a flag. I just came across it, and I was like, “Oh yeah, I loved that flag. The red and black vibe.” And then, you know, there’s always talk. We’re figuring out what’s next in that world and blah, blah, blah. You’ll know first, Steve. You always do.

These comments are coming not long after it was revealed that the reported feud with Robert Downey Jr. was nothing but rumors, which is also evidence that Reynolds is not confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday as of right now. Despite denying that he hasn’t been on set, this is a very classic Marvel response, since the studio is always incredibly secretive about their projects.

If he shows up at all, it will likely be a surprise appearance, which may be the goal that Marvel Studios is striving for, since Kevin Feige has said that they haven’t announced the entire cast. In terms of future projects, the star could be referring to the X-Men movie with ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool that he has in the works.

If audiences don’t see him in the 2026 installment, it’s always possible Reynolds will be part of the Avengers: Secret Wars cast instead. Since this will be the big finale for Phase 6, it makes sense to have him and other additional players return at that point.

Given the $1.3 billion success of his 2024 movie in The Multiverse Saga, there is no way that Marvel Studios will bench Reynolds for too long. Hopefully, as Avengers: Doomsday gets closer to finishing principal pH๏τography, more details will emerge about who is actually part of the film.
