Disney’s New Movie Based On Very Popular Children’s Series Gets Release Date

Disney has finally confirmed a release date for the highly anticipated Bluey movie. Bluey has grown from a charming Australian series into a global phenomenon, beloved by all ages. Following the adventures of a 6-year-old blue heeler pup and her family, the show has earned widespread acclaim for its emotionally resonant and child-friendly portrayal of parenting, play, and everyday life.

Created by Joe Brumm and produced by Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios, Bluey has become the most-streamed series of both 2024 and the first half of 2025. As a result, Bluey has also picked up major honors along the way, including an Emmy Award, a BAFTA, a 2024 Peabody Award, as well as back-to-back Television Critics á´€ssociation Awards.

In 2024, it was announced that the Bluey universe would be expanding with a feature-length CG-animated film. Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack are set to return as Mum (Chilli) and Dad (Bandit), and the story promises to blend the show’s signature warmth and wit with a bigger narrative canvas.

Now, Disney has announced the upcoming Bluey movie will be released in cinemas on August 6, 2027. This marks the first theatrical outing for the beloved Heeler family, and while more specific plot details are under wraps, the film promises to bring the award-winning series to life on the big screen, offering an all-new adventure for Bluey, Bingo, and their parents.

The CG-animated film will be written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, with Amber Naismith (Happy Feet, The LEGO Movie) producing and Richard Jeffery (Bluey, Series 1-3) serving as co-director. Brumm will also serve as executive producer on the Bluey movie in collaboration with producers from BBC Studios and Ludo Studio, with Disney oversight led by David Greenbaum.

Releasing the Bluey movie on August 6, 2027, places it at the peak of the summer box office window, a coveted slot typically reserved for major family films. This signals Disney and BBC Studios’ high expectations for the movie, not just as a companion to the series, but as a standalone theatrical event capable of drawing in a broad audience.

It also positions Bluey‘s movie to compete alongside some of the biggest IPs in entertainment, elevating the franchise from streaming favorite to potential box office powerhouse. The decision for an early August release date gives the animated film plenty of breathing room before fall blockbusters hit, and ensures families across key global markets will be available during school holidays.

Thus, an August release date for the Bluey movie is a smart and strategic move. Landing in the heart of the summer holidays, this positions the film for maximum family turnout, especially with kids out of school and parents seeking quality entertainment they can enjoy together. It also gives the creators ample time to develop something worthy of the show’s reputation.

With Brumm and the original team behind the scenes, it’s clear this isn’t a rushed cash-in, but a carefully planned expansion of the series. By aiming for a wide theatrical release during the peak moviegoing season, Disney and BBC Studios are signaling major confidence in Bluey‘s ability to carry a full-length feature, although it does mean a long wait for audiences.
