In recent years, Disney has released several live-action remakes of their most notable animated films with varying levels of success. Movies like Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast have become some of the more acclaimed and profitable products of this trend, breaking box office records and winning over critics and audiences.
While Disney’s live-action remakes have become some of their most popular films in the past couple of decades, they have not always wowed the public. For instance, live-action movies like The Lion King and Aladdin grossed billions of dollars at the box office, but they still weren’t as well-received as the animated originals.
However, after releasing multiple lackluster remakes such as Dumbo, Pinocchio, and Snow White, Disney’s future adapting its iconic animated IPs for live-action movies was called into question. That was before a recent live-action remake from Disney turned things around.
After scoring big with audiences at the box office and being well-received by critics, Disney will find another wave of success as the movie hits streaming.
Disney’s Lilo & Sтιтch Live-Action Remake Is Now Streaming On Disney+ After $1 Billion Box Office
As of September 3, the remake of Lilo & Sтιтch is available to stream on Disney+ after an incredible theatrical run. Director Dean Fleischer Camp’s film adapts the classic 2002 movie about a young Hawaiian girl who adopts a runaway alien that poses as her new pet and helps fix her troubled family.
After premiering in 2025, the Lilo & Sтιтch remake made over $1.035 billion worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). On top of that, Lilo & Sтιтch was very well-received, acquiring an impressive 72% rating from critics and a 92% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Having had an astounding turnout in theaters, Lilo & Sтιтch has become Disney’s fourth-highest-grossing live-action remake ever. Its worldwide box office gross ranks behind that of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. It’s edged out Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in the top five chart.
Now that this hit movie can be streamed on Disney+, its success with audiences could become even greater. Subscribers tend to gravitate towards these new theatrical releases once they go to streaming, as even Snow White found its audience after going to Disney+.
In the end, the remake of Lilo & Sтιтch proved that audiences still couldn’t get enough of the тιтular duo’s story and their adorable antics. It also showed that Disney’s live-action remakes can still be enjoyable and profitable when done right. Seeing this, Disney may rebound from its string of disappointing live-action remakes and produce more movies on its animated classics.
