Netflix has revealed the first trailer for its upcoming political thriller A House of Dynamite, which just had a strong debut at the Venice International Film Festival. A House of Dynamite is directed by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and stars Dune‘s Rebecca Ferguson and the MCU’s Idris Elba, among others.
With many critics from Venice calling the thriller revolving around nuclear warfare downright terrifying, A House of Dynamite takes place within the White House when the United States is threatened with an impending missile strike, with Ferguson and Elba playing White House staff attempting to manage the crisis.
Written by Noah Oppenheim, A House of Dynamite also stars Gabriel Bᴀsso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. Netflix is releasing A House of Dynamite in select theaters on October 10, ahead of its wide release on the streaming platform on October 24; check out the teaser trailer below:
What This Means For A House Of Dynamite
Following A House of Dynamite‘s debut with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score, thus establishing a foothold with critics, it needs to win over audiences. It is notably one of Netflix’s few releases getting a theatrical treatment; the streamer is also releasing Frankenstein and Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man in theaters for a short time this year, both movies with arguably wider appeal.
The short and vague teaser is chilling, doing exactly what it needs to do to sell what this movie will be. A House of Dynamite might benefit from a more fleshed-out trailer down the line, but relying on just this video and good word of mouth from the festival circuit could be enough for it.
However, given the R rating and the small window between the time the movie releases in theaters and the time it goes to streaming, A House of Dynamite probably will not have a huge box office. However, it is likely to be a mᴀssive success once it is readily available on Netflix.
Our Take On A House Of Dynamite’s Teaser Trailer
A House of Dynamite‘s teaser manages to be even scarier through the minimal nature of most teaser trailers. It effectively illustrates the mounting panic of the worst-case scenario the characters find themselves in as the White House goes into DEFCON 1; the staff are trying to remain professional, but there are small moments that hint at their fear and connection.
The montage of the characters reacting to this situation, along with the narration stressing humanity’s place in the universe itself, tells us a lot about this movie’s core themes. Thankfully, A House of Dynamite has a cast and crew that should be able to live up to the anticipation of the weighty story it sets out to tell.
