Netflix Officially Confirms Knives Out 3’s Theater Release To Preserve Franchise’s 6-Year Tradition

Netflix reveals theatrical release date and plot details for Daniel Craig’s highly anticipated Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Coming to the streamer’s platform on December 12, the James Bond star will reprise his role as private investigator Benoit Blanc in the third installment of the Knives Out series.

Known for solving high-profile homicide cases, Blanc is headed to his most dangerous case yet in the upcoming movie written and directed by Rian Johnson. He’s joined by a brand-new cast, featuring Josh O’Connor, Jeremy Renner, Glen Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

Now, Netflix has confirmed that Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man will be released in select theaters on November 26 after a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and screening at the London Film Festival in October. This carries on the franchise tradition of a Thanksgiving theatrical release, as the first two movies debuted the same weekend:

Said to be the “darkest chapter” in the Knives Out series, the new movie will see Blanc joining forces with the local police chief to solve a “sudden and seemingly impossible murder.” Read the full synopsis below:

Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnson’s murder mystery opus. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) is sent to ᴀssist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it’s clear that all is not well in the pews.

Wicks’s modest-but-devoted flock includes devout church lady Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), circumspect groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), тιԍнтly-wound lawyer Vera Draven (Kerry Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), town doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), best-selling author Lee Ross (Andrew Scott), and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny).

After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.

Netflix also shared a teaser poster for the whodunit, featuring Blanc and the rest of the cast surrounding a grave; see this image below:

What This Means For Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man

Daniel Craig Leaning Up Against a Tree in a Cemetery in Knives Out Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man

Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man‘s first trailer gave the audience a taste of Blanc’s exciting, dark new case while teasing a Gothic vibe. The church and cemetery will be the key locations in the movie, which features fascinating characters. From Renner’s town doctor to O’Connor’s young priest and Scott’s best-selling author, the third installment appears to be the perfect crime meets small-town drama.

A limited theatrical release and film festival premiere also mean that Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man will be eligible for submission to the 98th Academy Awards. On the other hand, fans who have been eagerly waiting for the movie will be able to watch it in November, almost a month before its official premiere on Netflix.

Our Take On Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man’s Release Date & Plot

Benoit Blanc is destined to get his hands dirty (literally) in the new investigation, but it seems that the case in particular will be a highlight that prompts the renowned PI to try harder than ever. Teased as “a mystery that defies all logic,” Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man‘s mystery could get personal and messy, unlike the lighthearted and almost effortless process in previous entries.

It’s also worth mentioning that, much like the first two movies, Wake Up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Man‘s тιтle drew inspiration from a song. Knives Out was inspired by a Radiohead track, Glᴀss Onion refers to the Beatles’ song of the same name, and the third movie gets its тιтle from a 1997 U2 song — and, like with its predecessors, “wake up ᴅᴇᴀᴅ man” likely alludes to a major thematic component.
