For the past few months, KPop Demon Hunters has been dominating Netflix‘s global charts, but a brand-new contender has emerged. Last week, the animated musical hit 236 million views, making it Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time, surpᴀssing Red Notice (2021), which has 230.9 million views. Still, a few Netflix releases have temporarily knocked the animated musical from the top of their weekly Global Top 10.
Among those were Tyler Perry’s psychological thriller Straw, Charlize Theron’s superhero sequel The Old Guard 2, Adam Sandler’s sequel Happy Gilmore 2 – which held the top spot for two consecutive weeks – and, most recently, the romantic dramedy My Oxford Year. Even so, last week KPop Demon Hunters reclaimed its spot as number one on Netflix’s Global Top 10.
Now, Netflix’s new star-studded murder mystery movie has become a global smash hit shortly after its release this past weekend, and it could very well challenge KPop Demon Hunters for the top spot on the streaming service’s Global Top 10 for this week, and beyond.
The Thursday Murder Club Is A Global Smash Hit On Netflix
The Thursday Murder Club has become a global smash hit on Netflix. Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) with a script written by Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote based on the 2020 novel by Richard Osman, Netflix’s new murder mystery movie follows a group of elderly amateur sleuths who attempt to solve a murder.
The Thursday Murder Club‘s cast includes Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen), former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, Oscar winner Ben Kingsley (Ghandi), Celia Imrie, former Doctor Who actor David Tennant, Oscar nominee Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Star Wars actor Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and many more.
Shortly after its release on August 28, The Thursday Murder Club ranks first on Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the world for today, September 1. It ranks above KPop Demon Hunters, Fall for Me, Love Untangled, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, Abandoned Man, KPop Demon Hunters – Sing-Along, The Northman, 2 Hearts, and The Woman King.
Our Take On The Thursday Murder Club’s Netflix Success
The Thursday Murder Club has quickly risen to the top of Netflix’s global charts, thanks to its star-studded cast and engaging murder mystery. It’s been a winning formula for Netflix, as proven previously by Rian Johnson’s Glᴀss Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. At this rate, The Thursday Murder Club could very well dethrone KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart this week.
