The start of any month is always a big time for Netflix because the streaming service sees a bunch of new releases arrive on the platform. That’s indeed the case again in September, as Labor Day sees some modern classics join Netflix’s already impressive catalog, meaning it’s a great week to use your service to its fullest potential.
Of course, there are Netflix originals and great films to watch this week that have been on the platform for a while, but the new crop of additions is so good that this week’s recommendations all come from there. They include an Oscar-winning musical, two family-friendly modern classics, a raunchy female-led comedy, and one of the best heist thrillers ever.
Paddington (2014)
The success of 2014’s Paddington was something to behold. Based on the тιтular character from children’s books, this could’ve been a flop like The Cat in the Hat or Where the Wild Things Are. Instead, Paddington was a big financial success while also getting heavy praise from critics.
The film follows the anthropomorphic marmalade-loving bear as he leaves his home in the jungle to come to London and is adopted by the loving Brown family. Watching this group come together is heartwarming, especially considering how pure Paddington is at his core.
Ben Whishaw is perfect at voicing the protagonist, while Hugh Bonneville and Sally Hawkins lead the Brown family with likable performances. Throw in Nicole Kidman as the villain, and there’s so much to like. Both sequels are also beloved, with Paddington 2 even getting referenced for its greatness in The Unbearable Weight of Mᴀssive Talent.
Bridesmaids (2011)
For far too long, raunchy comedy movies were centered purely around men. From Road Trip to American Pie to The Hangover, it was always a group of guys at the center with supporting female characters often looking down on their wacky antics. Then, Bridesmaids came along and let the ladies shine.
Written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, Bridesmaids centers on a woman who is the Maid of Honor for her best friend’s upcoming wedding, only for every event leading up to the big day to devolve into shenanigans. From bathroom accidents at a bridal shop to drug-induced madness on a flight, there are so many memorable scenes.
The cast is brilliant with Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and the rest of the women all bringing something different and funny to the table. Melissa McCarthy steals the show in a rare comedy role nominated for an Academy Award. This is a must-see for anyone looking to have a good laugh.
Inside Man (2006)
The combination of director Spike Lee and actor Denzel Washington is a great one, from Mo’ Better Blues to Malcolm X to He Got Game but their best work together might be Inside Man. This heist thriller hooks you early and never lets go, with intense scenes from start to finish.
Not to be confused with the Netflix series of the same name, Inside Man focuses on a hostage negotiator who deals with a criminal mastermind overseeing a bank robbery while the bank’s founder works with a fixer to keep something hidden from the thieves and cops.
Washington is joined by a stellar cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, and Christopher Plummer. Critical reception for Inside Man was very strong, as it holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The heist subgenre is filled with great films, yet Inside Man remains one of the best.
Shrek 2 (2004)
When Shrek first arrived in 2001, it marked a change in Hollywood. This was a non-Disney animated movie that became a cultural phenomenon, which was rare, and it made history as the first winner of the Best Animated Feature Academy Award. Despite those accolades, the highly anticipated Shrek 2 managed to best the original.
Shrek 2 takes what works in the original and puts a fun spin on it, as this time, the тιтular ogre is turned into a human to the dismay of Fiona. The Fairy Godmother being the villain added another twist on fairy tale lore and her musical number set to “Holding Out for a Hero” remains a classic.
To this day, Shrek 2 is considered the high point of the series, though Puss in Boots: The Last Wish gives it a run for its money. This installment also introduced Puss in Boots, grossed nearly $1 billion, and helped truly establish the Shrek franchise going forward.
La La Land (2016)
There’s no denying that La La Land is one of the best movies of the 2010s. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Damien Chazelle, La La Land tells the story of an aspiring actress named Mia (Emma Stone) and a jazz pianist named Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) who fall in love while chasing their dreams in Hollywood.
The film comes to life with remarkable and lively musical numbers, whether it’s everyone in traffic dancing on cars in “Another Day in the Sun” or Mia and Seb tap-dancing in front of a beautiful view to “A Lovely Night.” La La Land stands as one of the greatest musical films ever made, so it’s a must-see on Netflix.
A lot of people remember the gaffe at the Oscars where La La Land was incorrectly named as the Best Picture winner. However, it should be remembered more for its many accomplishments like the six Academy Awards it won, including Best Director and Best Actress, as well as a Golden Globe win for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
