James Gunn’s R-Rated Batman Spinoff Horror Movie Gets First Look As Filming Begins

The upcoming Batman spinoff movie Clayface has officially begun filming as new set pH๏τos have arrived from the latest DC Universe production. As the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” has released several projects already, DC Studios is now working on one of their next theatrical films for 2026.

Set to release on September 11, 2026 as part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters”, Clayface will tell the story of one of Bruce Wayne’s monstrous villains in the character’s live-action debut. James Watkins is directing the film based on a script from Mike Flanagan.

Clayface has finally started principal pH๏τography in Liverpool, UK, and Just Jared has released several set pH๏τos from production, giving a first proper look at Tom Rhys Harries as the тιтular character. While there have been reports that he is playing the Matt Hagen iteration of Clayface, DC Studios hasn’t confirmed that yet.

The set pH๏τos from Just Jared feature Harries walking around in a blue hoodie, next to an actor who is wearing the same clothing. While the outlet is identifying Harries’ co-star as Eddie Marsan, DC Studios has yet to confirm his involvement.

Daily Mail also got images of the lead actor that show the character all bruised up and covered in blood. The pH๏τos also show the production shooting a scene where a patient – possibly Harries’ character – is being rushed to the hospital.

Based on the first batch of set pH๏τos, it definitely seems as if they are shooting the character’s origin story for the Clayface movie, setting him up to become the iconic Batman villain. While pH๏τos reveal Harries rushed to the hospital, whatever causes the accident that creates Clayface in this film is likely going to be filmed in a studio.

Just Jared’s set pH๏τos may have also given a first look at who Harries’ character will shapeshift into after he gets his powers. As he and Marsan – if that truly is him – are wearing the exact same clothes, it wouldn’t be shocking at all if this is from a scene where Harries uses his abilities in the story.

What is also a key takeaway from the Clayface set pH๏τos is the inclusion of Jitters Coffee and the logos used for Gotham City PD and Gotham City News 1. Given the designs, this confirms once again that The Batman universe from Matt Reeves, featuring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, will remain separate from DC Studios’ main continuity.

While this is early in the process, it’s exciting to see Clayface filming. This will be one of DC Studios’ most unique projects, given that it will be a R-rated horror film based on a Batman villain. Hopefully, as Clayface continues principal pH๏τography, more clues about the story will emerge sooner rather than later.
