Guillermo Del Toro’s Netflix Reimagining Of Monster Classic Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

The new Netflix monster movie from Guillermo del Toro is performing well on Rotten Tomatoes. Del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker who is best known for bringing dark fantasies to the screen in тιтles such as his Spanish-language movies The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth and the 2004 comic book adaptation Hellboy.

Guillermo del Toro movies have collectively grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide, but they have also garnered a great deal of critical respect. In fact, his 2017 movie The Shape of Water won Best Picture in a compeтιтive category that also included Call Me By Your Name, Lady Bird, Get Out, Dunkirk, Phantom Thread, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

He also won Best Director for The Shape of Water and Best Animated Feature for Pinocchio, earning additional nominations for Pan’s Labyrinth (Best Original Screenplay), The Shape of Water (Best Original Screenplay), and Nightmare Alley (Best Picture). His latest movie could also prove to be a strong awards contender.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein Is Being Lauded By Critics

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has made a splash with critics. The movie, which is a reimagining of the iconic Gothic horror novel by Mary Shelley, is set to debut on Netflix on November 7 after a limited theatrical run beginning on October 17. However, it just had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 30.

The movie, which was written and directed by del Toro, marks the three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker’s first feature-length release since his 2022 stop-motion project Pinocchio, which was also a Netflix тιтle.

The cast of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein includes Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the Creature, Felix Kammerer as Victor’s brother William, Mia Goth as William’s fiancée Elizabeth, Charles Dance as Victor’s father Leopold, and Christoph Waltz as Victor’s patron Henrich Harlander.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated enough reviews of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to give it an official Tomatometer score. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, 18 different critics have weighed in to give the movie a solidly Fresh 78% score.

What This Means For Frankenstein

The reviews for Frankenstein have so far been more mixed than del Toro’s previous movies Pinocchio (96%) and Nightmare Alley (80%). In fact, it has earned his fifth-lowest Rotten Tomatoes score as a director, ahead of just Crimson Peak (72%), Pacific Rim (72%), Mimic (67%), and Blade II (57%).

However, this seems to speak to how well-received Guillermo del Toro movies are in general rather than any particular deficits in his new movie. Many critics are still highly praising Frankenstein for its production design, operatic spectacle, and nightmarish horror.
