At this point, pretty much everyone has seen Wicked, but if you haven’t, this weekend is the perfect time to watch the acclaimed musical. If you have seen it, this is also the ideal time to rewatch it ahead of the highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good.

A prequel to The Wizard of Oz, this film tells the story of the early relationship between Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), long before they were known as witches. The chemistry between Grande and Erivo is remarkable and drives the film to its incredible success.

That success included Wicked becoming the highest-grossing musical adaptation of all time and earning 10 Academy Award nominations, including acting nods for both Erivo and Grande. Whether it’s a first-time viewing or a rewatch where you will sing-along, watching Wicked this weekend is a great decision.

My Old ᴀss (2022)

Actor Megan Park (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) has quietly become one of the most impressive up-and-coming filmmakers in all of Hollywood. Her feature debut, The Fallout, was a gripping drama about a school shooting starring Jenna Ortega and featuring a hard-hitting ending. It was met with widespread acclaim.

Those who saw The Fallout were excited about her follow-up, which delivered in spades. That film is My Old ᴀss, which focuses on a teenager (Maisy Stella) who trips on mushrooms and has an unexpected interaction with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza).

My Old ᴀss was a critical darling, holding a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Plaza provided another standout performance in her career, while Stella was praised for her acting in her debut role. Stella even won a Critics’ Choice Award for her efforts, helping to make this a must-see film.

These days, everyone knows Christopher Nolan thanks to his fantastic work on The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, among others. Despite all his success, the conversation for his best movie ever begins with Memento.

Released years before Nolan became a household name, Memento is an early look at many of his signature tropes and his directorial style. The film follows a man with short-term amnesia (Guy Pearce) who leaves himself clues to help remember things as he searches for his wife’s murderer.

Memento features a non-linear narrative that includes telling parts of the story in reverse, which is exactly the kind of thing Nolan became known for later. The cult hit was nominated for two Oscars and was eventually selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. It’s a movie all filmmakers should seek out.
