3 Underrated Cult Classics To Watch On Streaming This Weekend

As opposed to newer movies, a handful of cult classics could be the perfect way to spend time watching movies over the three-day, Labor Day weekend. Old favorites across multiple genres can be found on most major streaming services, from Prime Video to HBO Max.

While it’s true that the original content pumped out by Netlfix, Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max offers a never-ending stream of new movies and TV shows to enjoy, sometimes it may be preferred to look for something that’s a bit more tried-and-tested.

With a new movie or show, it’s hard to know what to expect, but in the case of a cult classic, there’s much less uncertainty as to whether that film is going to be worth your time.

Bloodsport (Prime Video)

Released in 1988, Bloodsport is Jean-Claude Van Damme’s claim to fame and a film that deserves to be contention for the тιтle of one of the greatest American-made martial arts movies of all time. It even spawned an entire movie franchise, albeit one that hardly receives much attention in 2025.

The first film in the series (and the only one to star Van Damme) follows what is supposedly a true story about a martial artist named Frank Dux who competes in a underground fighting tournament called the Kumite.

In addition to boasting a wide range of fighting styles via its diverse selection of compeтιтors, Bloodsport concludes in a truly epic showdown, complete with some of Van Damme’s coolest moves.

The Toxic Avenger (Tubi)

The Toxic Avenger

Streaming on Tubi, a free streaming service, The Toxic Avenger is a story about an odd janitor and frequent victim of bullying who gets transformed into a super-powered, grotesque being after falling into a vat of toxic waste. His new appearance and powers leads him to become a vigilante – and an extremely violent one to boot.

The Toxic Avenger is unquestionably one of the strangest superhero films ever made, but its use of horror and gruesome violence has lent itself well to its popularity, even decades later. It’s even prompted a remake of the cult classic film.

Highlander (Tubi, Prime Video, Peacock)

Found on multiple streaming services, such as Peacock and Prime Video, Highlander is a creative blend of fantasy and modern-day action, and one that’s ripe with superb world-building (so much that it yielded a movie franchise and a TV series).

Starring Christopher Lambert as the тιтular swordsman, the 1980s cult classic fantasy film follows an immortal warrior from the distant past living in the present, where he must contend with other immortals lurking in plain sight.

Given the sword-fighting and action sequences and the all lore it built around its concept of immortality, it’s no wonder Highlander has emerged as a cult classic.
