Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Casts 6-Time Oscar Nominee & Begins Filming

Many new stars have joined the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter as production on the movie kicks off. The upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter is a standalone installment in the iconic science fiction franchise that is being directed by ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy and set to take place five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

The movie, which is set to be the next Star Wars installment in theaters after 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, will star Ryan Gosling. It was also previously revealed that Matt Smith (Doctor Who, House of the Dragon) and Mia Goth (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) will be playing two antagonists in the movie.

Per the official Star Wars website, Starfighter began filming today in the UK. The full cast of the movie has now been revealed. Six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams has joined the ensemble of Starfighter alongside Aaron Pierre, Flynn Gray, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

Below, see a post announcing the commencement of production from the official Star Wars X account. The black-and-white image featured in the post features Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray sitting together on a small floating craft.

Shawn Levy also issued a statement about the production, which can be read below:

I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.

What This Means For Star Wars: Starfighter

So far, the plot of the upcoming Star Wars movie has remained тιԍнтly under wraps. However, the image shared in the announcement post seems to imply that Ryan Gosling’s character is in some way a protector or mentor figure to the character played by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 star Flynn Gray.

This would evoke an adult-child relationship that is common throughout the Star Wars franchise and has been at the core of installments such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Skeleton Crew, and The Phantom Menace.

While it has not yet been announced what characters any of the cast of the Ryan Gosling movie will be playing, the incoming actors who are joining Starfighter may offer some insight into the overall tone of the movie.

For instance, while some of the cast have experience in major science fiction and fantasy projects, including Amy Adams (Arrival, Enchanted) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad, Mufasa: The Lion King, Krypton), the majority of them have more experience in the comedy realm, including Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners) and Daniel Ings (Lovesick).

This could indicate that Star Wars: Starfighter will blend sci-fi and comedy in the manner that Shawn Levy has become known for after helming recent projects such as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, The Adam Project, and Free Guy.
