Neon has announced The Young People, its next movie with Longlegs and The Monkey director Oz Perkins, which will star two major up-and-coming names. Perkins is also a rising star, with his two hit horror movies coming out in the last year and the recent reveal of the trailer for Keeper, his next movie to be released.
Neon has a first-look deal with Perkins, and released both Longlegs and The Monkey, and will do the same for Keeper. After that, Perkins’ next Neon movie will be The Young People, which will star The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Lola Tung and How to Train Your Dragon‘s Nico Parker. The Young People is set to begin filming in Vancouver in the fall.
Tung previously portrayed Eurydice on Broadway in the show Hadestown, making her on-screen debut with Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty. In addition to playing Astrid in the successful live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, Parker starred in 2019’s Dumbo and guest-starred in HBO’s The Last of Us.
Perkins wrote the screenplay for The Young People and is also producing alongside Chris Ferguson under their production company Phobos and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones for Range.
What This Means For Lola Tung, Nico Parker, & Osgood Perkins
In addition to starring in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2, Parker will appear on screens again in Poetic License, which will debut at TIFF on September 6. Meanwhile, with only one previous on-screen credit, Tung secured a leading role in the comedy-horror Forbidden Fruits, starring alongside the likes of Lili Reinhart and Alexandra Shipp.
The news of their forthcoming collaboration with Perkins signifies a great next step for both Tung and Parker in their careers. Both are clearly in-demand young stars who could benefit from appearing in different genres. Meanwhile, Perkins is churning out horror movies while maintaining quality and is on the verge of becoming a household name.
Our Take On Osgood Perkins’ The Young People
The biggest question may be: “Can Oz Perkins maintain his streak of great horror movies?” The Young People won’t be the project to determine this, as Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, hits theaters on November 14. Admittedly, Perkins’ projects aren’t reaching the levels of acclaim of Sinners or Weapons, which look to be transforming the horror genre.
But being able to produce multiple movies in a historically tricky genre that do decently well with critics and are popular among audiences is equally impressive. Oz Perkins is cementing himself as a horror staple, and it would be great to see Tung and Parker become regular collaborators after The Young People, as they would also likely become icons of the genre.
