Emma Stone’s Sci-Fi Remake Debuts With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Following Venice Premiere

Emma Stone first graced the silver screen in a series of comedies, such as Superbad (2007), Zombieland (2009), and Easy A (2010). The latter performance, her first leading role, brought forth a breakthrough, leading swiftly to the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love and the Oscar-winning period drama The Help, both in 2011.

In subsequent years, Stone cemented her stardom with a turn as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel. Critical acclaim soon followed, receiving Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress for portraying both fragile and fierce souls in Birdman (2014) and The Favourite (2018). The latter film marked her first of many collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Stone’s career reached its zenith in recent years, winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress, dazzling as a dreamer chasing stardom in the musical La La Land (2016), and astonishing audiences again as the audacious Bella Baxter in Lanthimos’ Poor Things (2023). Following Kinds of Kindness (2024), Stone has reunited with Lanthimos once again, this time for a sci-fi remake, and it’s garnering mᴀssive buzz following its premiere.

Bugonia Debuts With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Bugonia has debuted with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with a script written by Will Tracy serving as an English-language remake of the South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia stars Emma Stone as a powerful CEO who is abducted by two conspiracy-minded men convinced that she is secretly an alien plotting to annihilate Earth.

Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) stars as one of the kidnappers, reuniting with Stone and Lanthimos after Kinds of Kindness. The cast also includes Aidan Delbis as the other kidnapper alongside Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone, the latter reuniting with Lanthimos after The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).

Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 28, Bugonia has debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie only has 17 reviews at the time of writing, so it could lose its perfect score as more are published. Bugonia doesn’t release in theaters until October 24, so it won’t have an audience score until then.

What Bugonia’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

The movie’s perfect Rotten Tomatoes score means that its reviews are unanimously positive. For instance, in ScreenRant‘s Bugonia review, Jack Walters writes, “Yorgos Lanthimos’ audacious thriller is a brilliant exercise in self-reflection… Lanthimos once again breaks new ground with Bugonia, a darkly comedic thriller that keeps the audience guessing from the first frame to the last.”

Otherwise, the reviews are mostly praising Plemons’ standout performance, highlighting his range from menacing to vulnerable. Critics note Lanthimos’ signature absurdist style, which blends dark humor with unsettling macabre energy. Though some find the second act slow or less innovative, the finale rewards viewers’ patience. Overall, Bugonia is bizarre, memorable, entertaining, and surprisingly grounded.
