Hulu’s New Heist Thriller Divides Critics & Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes

Hulu‘s new heist thriller is dividing critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Launched in 2007, the streaming service owned by Disney has built its reputation largely on an extensive library of television programming, including acclaimed FX series such as the culinary drama The Bear and the historical drama Shōgun, which have won a total of 39 Primetime Emmy Awards combined.

Although the streamer is most closely ᴀssociated with television, there are also several Hulu original movies. Notable examples include the Predator prequel Prey, the horror franchise revival Hellraiser (both 2022), and the John Cena-led comedies Vacation Friends (2021) and its sequel Vacation Friends 2 (2023). However, Hulu’s new heist thriller has proven polarizing, leaving critics and audiences sharply divided.

Eenie Meanie Divides Critics & Audiences On Rotten Tomatoes

Eenie Meanie is dividing critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Written and directed by Shawn Simmons in his feature debut, the new heist thriller follows a former teenage getaway driver trying to turn her life around, who is pulled back into a life of crime when an old boss tempts her with an opportunity to rescue her reckless ex-boyfriend.

Samara Weaving leads Eenie Meanie‘s cast alongside Karl Glusman, Emmy nominee Steve Zahn (The White Lotus season 1), Oscar nominee Andy Garcia (The Godfather Part III), Randall Park, former NFL player Marshawn Lynch, Emmy nominee Mike O’Malley (Glee), Kyanna Simone, Jermaine Fowler, and Chris Bauer.

Following its release on Hulu on August 22, Eenie Meanie currently has a 39% score from critics, coupled with a 60% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of writing, the movie has 36 reviews from critics and 100+ ratings from users, so these scores are subject to change over time.

Eenie Meanie‘s reviews are sharply divided, with many critics praising Samara Weaving’s performance and the film’s energetic car chases – calling it stylish, entertaining, and a promising debut for Shawn Simmons. Detractors find it derivative, tonally inconsistent, and overly reliant on clichés, suffering from underdeveloped characters and a shallow story. Overall, it’s a polarizing heist movie admired for its flair but faulted for its substance.

Audiences, on the other hand, are embracing Eenie Meanie much more than critics – finding it fun, heartfelt, and elevated by Weaving’s performance. Audiences are praising everything from its blend of gritty car chases, humor, and unexpected sincerity. While critics find fault with its clichés and other issues, audiences value its entertainment factor over originality, explaining the sharp divide between its Rotten Tomatoes scores.
