KPop Demon Hunters 2 is looking more and more likely after the first movie, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, shattered Netflix records. Just as the first film became Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time, news has broken that suggests a followup may not be too far away.
KPop Demon Hunters is a PG-rated action musical that sees K-pop stars Mira, Zoey, and Rumi stomping out supernatural dangers as well as their compeтιтion on the Billboard charts. With real K-pop groups like BTS and BLACKPINK dominating global music markets, the movie tapped into the zeitgeist and had the right combination of music and action to keep audiences engaged.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Sony and Netflix are in talks to make a sequel to the smash hit. The news follows continued work to increase the presence and power of KPop Demon Hunters such as Netflix’s release of a sing-along version of the film in select theaters.
What This Means For KPop Demon Hunters
The fact that Sony and Netflix are already in talks to produce a KPop Demon Hunters 2 makes it clear that both studios are eager to capitalize on the success of the first film.
While each company’s goals for the deal are unknown, it stands to reason that Sony and Netflix will strive to reach an agreement and continue the KPop Demon Hunters story as quickly as possible in order to strike while the proverbial iron is H๏τ.
Of course, what this news doesn’t mean is that the sequel is absolutely happening just yet. The Hollywood Reporter quoted a source saying that “it was certainly a mistake” for Sony to pᴀss the film’s distribution rights to Netflix rather than spend the money on promoting a theatrical run.
If true, this could see Sony wanting to fight for certain deal points in order to rectify what they see as an error. That, in turn, could prolong the negotiation process and the timeline of a sequel.
Our Take On KPop Demon Hunters 2
ScreenRant’s KPop Demon Hunters review lauded the movie’s blend of genres, strong songs, and captivating story, and the movie’s 97% critic score and 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes suggest that others feel the same. To me, that means a sequel is absolutely happening, even if it takes a moment to iron out the details.
I’m interested in seeing if, thanks to the first movie’s success and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters theatrical sing-along re-release, KPop Demon Hunters 2 has a wide theatrical release. It’s rare for Netflix to put any movies in theaters, especially in many theaters, but I could see Sony advocating for such a thing after missing the boat the first time around.
