Superman has entered a select superhero movie box office group, with the new DC Universe starting on the right foot. James Gunn’s DCU is making sure that Superman is as important as the character should be. The lack of a focus on the Man of Steel in the DCEU movie franchise was one of its biggest problems, with Henry Cavill done dirty.
Thankfully, David Corenswet’s Superman is not facing the same kind of issues. No one will be complaining about the lack of Superman anytime soon, as Clark Kent is one of the characters who has appeared in all DCU projects so far. That said, the biggest of them is, of course, Gunn’s Superman movie. DC needed the film to be a box office hit.
While it might not come close to the coveted $1 billion mark for superhero movies, Superman never had to. Future DC movies could look at surpᴀssing that mark, while Superman‘s reported budget of $225 million meant it only needed to finish within the $450-562.5 million range to break even and then become profitable. Superman has now joined a major box office chart.
Superman’s Box Office Has Broken Records
Taking the Superman movie’s needed $450-562.5 million finish to break even and start turning a profit, the DC Universe movie has succeeded in its goal. At the moment, Superman‘s worldwide box office stands at $605.3 million, according to data from The Numbers. That means that the James Gunn movie is already $42.8 million above the highest end of the projection.
Superman might not be able to surpᴀss Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel or get close to the $1 billion mark. However, the DC film did what it needed to do well, serving as a successful launch for the new DCU in the theatrical space. The Superman movie also helps show DC where the studio is performing better at the box office.
Sadly, Superman underperformed internationally. However, its domestic performance could not have been better, serving as a way of showing that the US market is ready to forget the old DCEU and embrace the new DC. Superman has broken a slew of domestic box office records throughout its theatrical run. Recently, the Superman movie entered Warner Bros.’s All-Time Domestic Top Ten with $347 million.
Superman Enters A Box Office Chart That Includes Just 10 Comic Book Movies
After Superman‘s latest domestic milestone helped the DC movie make history at Warner Bros., the film has now also entered a new box office chart that is significant for the state of superhero movies. According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, with its current worldwide total of $605.3 million, Superman is only the 10th comic book movie to gross over $600 million post-COVID.
Before the pandemic, it seemed like most superhero movies had a real sH๏τ at the coveted $1 billion mark, with smaller releases still performing well at the box office to the tune of over $600-$500 million. Now, Superman is the only 2025 superhero movie to pᴀss the $600 million mark. Its closest compeтιтor is the MCU’s final movie of the year.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is at a global total of $491.1 million, with the MCU movie projected to finish its box office run slightly over the $500 million mark. As part of the new box office chart Superman has entered post-COVID, the DC movie finds itself in the company of Robert Pattinson’s The Batman and several Marvel films.
2026’s Superhero Movies Should Add At Least Two New Entries To The Chart
While 2025 was overall a weak year for superhero movies at the box office, 2026 is likely going to turn things around in spectacular fashion. Marvel Studios will see the return of two of its biggest franchises. First up is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The film will be Peter Parker’s first since No Way Home nearly broke the $2 billion barrier.
While Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men are not expected to return, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will have the help of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher at the box office. Marvel’s other 2026 movie is none other than Avengers: Doomsday. It will be the first Avengers movie of the Multiverse Saga, bringing back Robert Downey Jr.
Both 2026 MCU movies seem locked for at least $1 billion worldwide, securing their places in the comic book movie box office chart that James Gunn’s Superman just entered. As for DC, Supergirl has a sH๏τ at grossing over $600 million, building on Superman‘s success and Milly Alcock’s cameo in the film. The horror movie Clayface is unlikely to do so.
James Gunn’s Planned Superman Sequel Could Be A Bigger Box Office Hit
While Superman is a profitable movie that is breaking domestic box office records for Warner Bros. and DC, I’m convinced that a sequel could perform even better. Good thing then that James Gunn is already writing the project. According to the director, it will not be a direct Superman sequel, though David Corenswet’s Man of Steel plays a key role in the film.
It has been teased that it could be a super-family adventure, so I believe a Superman and Supergirl crossover might be in the cards, perhaps with Brainiac’s DCU debut as the villain. Superman had to make audiences forget about the controversial DCEU and set up a new franchise. It has done so effectively, and the sequel could build on its success, flying higher.
