Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot gets an exciting update from the Marvel Cinematic Universe director. As the MCU timeline is currently finishing up The Multiverse Saga, with only a handful of movies and TV shows left in Phase 6, Marvel Studios is in the process of rebooting the iconic mutants for their ever-growing franchise.
According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the MCU’s X-Men will be crucial for the franchise after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, which is the final film for Phase 6. With details still incredibly limited about the direction of the reboot, the filmmaker behind the movie finally has new updates to share.
In a new interview with Empire Magazine, X-Men movie director Jake Schreier opened up about the process of the mutants’ upcoming live-action reboot. While talking about the importance of the X-Men, Schreier confirmed that they have started work on the highly anticipated project, as he shared the following update on the film:
Jake Schreier: I can’t say anything about it, but we’ve started work on X-Men, and that’s obviously very, very exciting. There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started [Thunderbolts*.] The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff. By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’
Outside of Schreier, the creative team for the movie features Michael Lesslie, who was previously announced in May 2024 to have boarded the X-Men reboot as the official screenwriter. At the time of this story’s publication, Marvel Studios has yet to set an official release date for the film.
What Jake Schreier’s X-Men Update Means
The Multiverse Saga’s end is seemingly going to set up the X-Men movie in one way or another, which is why it makes sense that work is already underway on the reboot. What could possibly be happening, ᴀssuming the script is finished, is that Marvel Studios could finally be early in the casting process for the stars for the team-up film.
If Schreier’s movie ends up being one of the first major Phase 7 installments, casting could be happening during the fall or lead into 2026 for a potential shoot next year or in 2027. With several MCU release dates for 2028 set by Marvel Studios, the mutants’ reboot is more than likely arriving that year.
Our Take On Jake Schreier’s X-Men Update
After Schreier’s tremendous work with the Thunderbolts* movie, it will be exciting to see how he handles the X-Men for the MCU, as he is definitely a strong filmmaker for big ensembles. After the era of the X-Men movies during Fox’s Marvel era, Marvel Studios has the chance to finally do justice to the iconic team.
In terms of who will be cast as the X-Men, it remains to be seen, as there have been rumors that Marvel Studios will be focusing on hiring young stars rather than A-listers. Hopefully, following Schreier’s update, more news on the X-Men reboot will start to emerge later this year.
