10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching The John Wick Franchise

The John Wick franchise is one of the most popular and successful action film series to come out of Hollywood in the last decade. The franchise stars Keanu Reeves as John Wick, a former ᴀssᴀssin pulled out of retirement when a man steals his car and kills his dog, a present from his recently deceased wife.

The franchise then goes into overdrive with the sequels, as John Wick breaks a cardinal rule by killing someone on protected grounds. He spends much of the franchise on the run from various ᴀssᴀssins across the world, killing countless people along the way. As good as the series is, there are some problems with the John Wick movies.

The Main John Wick Movies Keep Getting Longer

The first John Wick movie tells the story of a man living in peace when someone killed his dog. Wick set out on a path of revenge in a тιԍнтly paced movie that checked in at an hour and 41 minutes. It was a тιԍнт and violent action movie with great fight scenes and a fantastic payoff at the end.

While the second movie was just over two hours, the third added on nine more minutes, and the fourth movie checked in at a mᴀssive two hours and 49 minutes. In all, the fourth John Wick film was a full hour and eight minutes longer than the first. This is due mainly to the large mythology built into the story.

It is a lot for an action film. While John Wick: Chapter 4 was still a great, entertaining movie, it was almost three hours of gratuitous action scenes. They were as great as ever, but sometimes too much of a good thing diminishes the best moments of a movie.

John Wick 2’s “Subway Shootout” Scene Is Great, But Ridiculous

In John Wick: Chapter 2, a bounty was put on Wick’s head, and one of the most notable ᴀssᴀssins who came gunning for him was Cᴀssian (Common). Cᴀssian and John Wick have a mutual admiration for each other, but he was Gianna’s bodyguard, so when Wick killed her, he had to avenge her death.

There is then a moment when Cᴀssian and Wick end up in the York City Subway system. This scene was a great one and a lot of fun, but it was completely ridiculous. The two men used silencers and kept shooting at each other around the general public, none of whom realized what was going on or even took notice.

It all ended with John stabbing Cᴀssian in the aorta and leaving him on the train while John got away. The entire thing was entertaining to watch, but it’s a scene that makes no sense when rewatching the John Wick movies.

John Wick Movies Really Struggles Without John Wick

The four mainline John Wick movies are all great and deliver everything that action movie fans could possibly want. However, the action and story are fun and keep the films racing along, but it is Keanu Reeves who really sells the series. Without Reeves in the franchise as the main star, the entire series just stumbles along.

The Continental: From the World of John Wick was an interesting idea, following the rise of Winston at his H๏τel, but it never reached the level of entertainment without Reeves as Wick in the cast. Ballerina was a solid action movie, with a great performance by Ana de Armas, but it also failed to bring in an audience.

Reeves was in Ballerina in a supporting role as John Wick, but without him as the lead character, the John Wick franchise just falls short.

The ᴀssᴀssins Are All Seemingly Incompetent

One of the biggest jokes in the Star Wars universe is that the Stormtroopers can’t seem to hit anything. However, when watching the John Wick movies, the ᴀssᴀssins in his world might give the Stormtroopers a run for their money. In every movie, John Wick faces off with mᴀssive numbers of trained mercenaries and ᴀssᴀssins and is barely injured.

This is made even worse in cases where the ᴀssᴀssins get the drop on John Wick. The franchise gives him bulletproof suits, but when an ᴀssᴀssin in the subway tunnels sees him and opens fire, she only hits his suit, despite coming from behind him and his head being fully exposed.

John Wick should be able to outmaneuver ᴀssᴀssins because he is the hero of the franchise. However, when they miss easy sH๏τs from close range, it makes it look like every ᴀssᴀssin in this world is incompetent.

The Action Scenes Are Often Played For Comedy

Director Chad Stahelski has openly admitted that two of his biggest influences when choreographing action scenes are Jackie Chan kung-fu movies and silent-era Buster Keaton comedies. The Buster Keaton movies directly influenced the stairway battle in John Wick: Chapter 4.

While this is great, it also brings the action scenes down a little since it makes things a little more slapstick in many cases. This is perfect for fans who want their action to be silly, unrealistic, and over-the-top. However, it is something that could bother fans who want some down-and-dirty action sequences.

Based on the box office draw and the positive critical reviews, it is clear that fans of John Wick prefer the Jackie Chan-style fight scenes that are more about showing off than anything else.

The Police Don’t Seem To Care About The Murders

There is a scene in the first movie where John Wick kills several ᴀssᴀssins sent to his house to take him out. After he kills the last one by pounding a knife through his chest, he then hears his doorbell ring. John sees the police lights outside and answers the door to a police officer named Jimmy.

This might be one of the only places in the entire four movies where a cop is really shown, and he sees the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ body and tells John to have a nice night before leaving. When John is running the streets in later movies, there are no police officers there during the mᴀssive gunfights. The same thing happens in Paris.

It seems that in the world of John Wick, no police officer cares about all the murders on the streets, and the ᴀssᴀssins run wild. Eventually, viewers don’t even think about the police anymore, which is a problem. Maybe the High Table controls the police, but it remains a mystery.

John Wick Wastes So Many Bullets For A Master Hitman

There is a problem that occurs in almost any action movie that isn’t called Dirty Harry, which is the issue with bullets. In the John Wick movies, it seems John has an endless supply of bullets, and when he runs out, he just finds another gun. It is ridiculous by the time the fourth movie rolls around.

Of course, the excuse here is that fans should just turn off their brains and enjoy the carnage. However, as some experts said, John Wick is highly unrealistic in how he uses and fires his guns. It is also interesting that the movie has him endlessly firing bullets when he isn’t sure there is even a target there to hit.

John Wick shouldn’t have an endless supply of bullets, and he shouldn’t just shoot everywhere without looking. He is a highly trained ᴀssᴀssin, and he should be better trained on how to hit his targets. Of course, he wins every fight he is in, so it never really matters in the long run.

John Wick Globetrotting In Chapter 4 Makes No Sense

When John Wick killed someone on Continental grounds, he was made excommunicado, which meant he lost all the support of the High Table, the weapons, the protection, and the safe travel privileges. However, in John Wick: Chapter 4, Wick traveled around the world without a concern for his safety.

The entire thing makes no sense. Wick went from the United States to the deserts of the Middle East to Europe in a very short span of time, and he never seemed to have a problem in his travels. How he was able to globe-trot without notice, and not have ᴀssᴀssins waiting for him on planes and trains, is baffling.

John Wick is likely very wealthy, but he spent years being paid with the High Table gold, which is now worthless to him in this movie. How he managed to travel around the world makes no sense.

What Happened To Sofia?

Sofia (Halle Berry) is a giant plot hole in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. She helps John along the way, which should put her in the High Table’s crosshairs. In the film, the High Table punishes everyone who helps John, from Winston to the Bowry King and even the Director. However, nothing happens to Sofia.

What happened to Sofia in John Wick? Her last appearance in the franchise was leaving John in the desert so he could find and kill the Elder of the High Table. However, when the Adjudicator threatens to take the Continental from Winston, this doesn’t seem to happen to Sofia and her Casablanca Continental.

Leaving this open-ended could open up storylines for the future, but it makes no sense to know why she escaped the Adjucator’s justice.

John Wick Is Almost Too Superhuman

At the end of the day, people don’t watch the John Wick movies for realism, and most fans don’t care about plot holes or things that don’t make sense. It is all about gunplay, knife fights, and carnage. In this way, John Wick is similar to the Fast & Furious franchise, as neither is about anything more than high-octane action.

They also share another trait. As the franchise moves on, the characters are no longer real humans. They are almost superheroes. In one movie, a guy can drive a car off a cliff and end up swinging on a vine to the other side. In the other, a guy can fall down endless stairs and get up to keep fighting.

The biggest problem with watching John Wick movies repeatedly is that he seems superhuman and is in no danger of dying. Even when taking bullets to a bulletproof suit, it should still stagger him. However, for Wick, nothing hurts, and this made fans even doubt his death in the last movie, since John Wick can’t die.
