Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes Fans Won’t Be Discombobulated In September For A Good Reason

Fans of Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes movies can celebrate come September this year. 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Downey as the famous detective and Jude Law as Dr. Watson, received mixed reviews but have maintained a dedicated fanbase for the past decade, despite the industry moving on to other adaptations.

The fallout of widespread disappointment with the BBC’s Sherlock‘s later seasons may have especially boosted the legacy of Downey’s turn as Holmes. A Sherlock Holmes 3, the proposed sequel to A Game of Shadows, has been stuck in development since its predecessor came out, yet there is still lingering hope that this movie will actually see the light of day.

All the while, Downey’s career has flourished as he saw Tony Stark’s arc in the MCU to completion, then won his first Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer. Law’s definitive roles may be from earlier in his career, but he added some interesting characters to his filmography through the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises.

However, those who only want to return to these two actors’ time as Holmes and Watson needn’t wait much longer.

The Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes Movies Will Be On Netflix On September 1

Netflix announced via Instagram that Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes movies will be available to stream on the platform soon, along with other September releases. The platform is already invested in the bigger Sherlock Holmes brand, as they have produced two Enola Holmes movies starring Millie Bobby Brown. However, bringing the classics back will complete their collection.

Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will be available on Netflix again starting September 1, making for a perfect double feature to kick off fall. Both directed by Guy Ritchie, the first installment follows Holmes as he confronts what is seemingly a plot involving witchcraft, while the second brings in his famous rival, Professor Moriarty.

What This Means For The Sherlock Holmes Movies

As Downey and Law’s movies continue to have a complicated status in the zeitgeist — and there are certainly people who would love to see them reprise these roles — their being readily available on Netflix will keep the fandom alive, even if they are only there temporarily. They might instantly infiltrate the Top 10 once they hit streaming, which would be a true illustration of their continuous popularity.

With so many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, fans have a lot of material to survey when it comes to deliberating on what they want to see when these characters are brought to life on screen. However, this classic blockbuster approach has always had a lot going for it, as the leads’ performances do justice to the legendary characters.
