Red Sonja Digital Release Date Revealed: The Action Fantasy Thriller Flop Comes To VOD

Red Sonja‘s digital release date has been revealed. Based on the character from Conan the Barbarian, their second feature film following the 1985 version, the new film follows the тιтular wandering barbarian who, captured and chained, must fight for survival, rally outcasts, and battle through a tyrant’s empire to defeat Dragan and his ᴅᴇᴀᴅly bride, Dark Annisia.

Maltilda Lutz leads the cast as Red Sonja alongside Wallis Day as Dark Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Emperor Dragan the Magnificent, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Veronica Ferres, Luca Pasqualino, Katrina Durden, Rhona Mitra, Manal El-Feitury, Danica Davis, and Kate Nichols. M.J. Bᴀssett directs, from a script written by Tasha Huo.

Now, less than two weeks after its limited theatrical release on August 13, the reboot’s digital release date has been revealed. Red Sonja will be released on digital and on-demand platforms this Friday, August 29. Its Blu-ray, 4K, or DVD release date has yet to be revealed.

What Red Sonja’s Digital Release Date Means For The Movie

Red Sonja‘s digital release date has been revealed less than two weeks after its limited theatrical release on August 13, underscoring just how big a flop it was. Red Sonja reviews were divided, with many praising Lutz’s fierce lead performance and the film’s B-movie charm, while others criticized its weak writing, low-budget execution, forgettable humor, and uneven storytelling.

Red Sonja was released in theaters in the United States for one day only on August 13 and, as a result, made only $261,631 at the box office. The few who saw the film seemed to enjoy it more than critics, with a 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes from 100+ ratings, a slight increase from its more divided 56% score from critics with 55 reviews.

Audience reviews, on the other hand, were largely positive, with many praising Lutz’s performance, the action, and the film’s faithfulness to the character. Fans appreciated its fun sword-and-sorcery escapism, though a few consider it a poor remake compared to the original 1985 version.

Our Take On Red Sonja’s Digital Release

The cast of Red Sonja (2025)

After flopping at the box office, it’s unlikely that Red Sonja will perform much better on digital platforms. The film’s rushed transition to video-on-demand underscores its poor box office prospects, and VOD success rarely materializes after such limited theatrical exposure.

That said, its comparatively stronger audience approval provides a faint glimmer of hope. Unless fueled by cult appeal or word-of-mouth, Red Sonja‘s reach will likely remain niche, appealing primarily to genre enthusiasts who are already predisposed to sword-and-sorcery.
