How Eenie Meanie’s Shocking Ending Came Together Explained By Stars & Director

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Eenie MeanieThe stars and director of Eenie Meanie explain how the shocking ending came together. The action thriller, helmed by Shawn Simmons, follows a former getaway driver who becomes roped into a criminal operation alongside her ex-boyfriend. The cast of Eenie Meanie includes Samara Weaving of Ready or Not, Karl Glusman, Steve Zahn, Randall Park, and Andy Garcia.

The ending of Eenie Meanie features a surprise in Edie (Weaving) ultimately, and tearfully, killing John (Glusman), after everything that happened between them. Then, in a flash-forward, the movie reveals that Edie had her child and is celebrating Christmas with Baby Girl.

During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan as part of a screening and Q&A, the cast and director discussed the Eenie Meanie finale. On Edie’s decision to kill John, Glusman explained that it was a “nerve-wracking” moment to film, and noted that because so much happens, there was a “complicated logic.”

Prior to shooting, Glusman revealed that he consulted his co-stars about how to approach that major sequence. Glusman added that he “played it moment by moment” and reacted to Weaving and her performance. In sharing her memory of that scene, Weaving joked that it was very sunny. Read their comments below:

ScreenRant: You mentioned the pivotal scene where Edie makes the decision to kill our buddy over here, and it was so heartbreaking. I just want to hear what you guys were thinking in that moment.

Karl Glusman: That was actually a nerve-wracking scene for me. I felt like, for the most part, it was all really straightforward for me as far as what my job was in this movie. And then, when it got to that scene, you don’t think the way your character thinks. To get into the mindset of, “We’re here and feeling this way now, and then I’m going to make this decision, and I’m going to realize that…” It felt like a lot of twists and turns in a very short amount of time. It felt like a complicated logic to follow.

We had a green room where they stick some of the actors before the scene, and I opened it up to the forum. I was looking at Jermaine Fowler and Chris Bauer, saying, “Guys, I literally don’t know what to do. We’re about to shoot this scene, and I’m not joking. I am really not sure how to do this.” And Chris Bauer said, “Are you asking me?” And I said, “Yeah, I forgot how to act right now.” He said, “Why don’t you just play it moment by moment?”

It was this sort of “Duh” moment. That’s the way life is, and it’s Acting 101. I just played it moment by moment, and I played off of what Sam was giving me, and then I let her do her thing. She had a lot of heavy lifting in that scene, and I just wanted to give her space as an actor.

ScreenRant: What sticks out to you about filming that scene, Sam?

Samara Weaving: There was a lot of sun in my eyes that day. [Laughs] I just remember going, “Oh, I’m going to be really squinty in this one.” That was my biggest takeaway!

When it came to the flash-forward, Simmons noted that there seemed to be sadness in Edie’s expression, as she looked out the window, adding that memories of John may remain present for her. He also revealed that Baby Girl showed up because audiences enjoyed her and Weaving commented that “it’s really a love story between her and Baby Girl.

ScreenRant: In the final scene, we see the smile on Edie’s face as she’s looking out the window, with Baby Girl and her family in the background. What were the conversations like about her life after this moment?

Shawn Simmons: That moment was so beautiful. We played it a bunch of different ways with you in the window there. There is a very kind of “I’m not sure about it” feeling there. There’s some regret in your eyes. I always felt that was her looking up to the stars, like John had always said.

We had a lot of footage of that, and that little moment you did felt like she wasn’t so certain about the future, but had everything in front of her to some degree that she needed. But still, John’s always going to be up there, which I thought was so beautiful.

Samara Weaving: I just love that it’s really a love story between her and Baby Girl. It’s like the two of them were meant to be together. That’s my favorite.

Shawn Simmons: And Baby Girl scored so high that we had to come back and give her more. In the previews, it was just through the roof. They loved her, and she’s great. Fantastic.

What This Means For Eenie Meanie

The ending of Eenie Meanie is shocking, mainly because Edie and John have such a complicated romantic history. Though she wanted to walk away from crime, Edie agrees to be a getaway driver for a robbery scheme in order to save her ex-boyfriend. She also discovers early in the film that she is pregnant with John’s child.

There are moments throughout the movie that signal lingering feelings between Edie and John, including a heartfelt scene in which John reveals that he tried to change, and after learning about the pregnancy, John appears focused on rekindling their relationship.

Near the final minutes of Eenie Meanie, there is a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly encounter, and John kills people in order to keep their money. The shock is evident on Edie’s face, and she ultimately decides to shoot John, causing her to break down emotionally.

It is interesting to hear about what went into filming the Eenie Meanie ending and how Glusman approached that scene. Given what the characters went through, and how connected they suddenly seemed, the choice to kill John was a significant moment, both for Edie and the movie.

There can be a bittersweet feeling to the finale, as the flash-forward suggests that Edie is happy and living with Baby Girl, likely on track for a better life, but watching her and John’s child, audiences know that he is not coming back.
