The film, which debuted on Netflix on August 15, 2025, follows Lynette, a woman who is forced to obtain $25,000 in one night so that she and her family can remain in their home. Lynette’s desperate attempts to get the money are stressful to watch from the beginning to the end of Night Always Comes.

If you’re craving a high-stakes thriller movie, then Night Always Comes is worth a watch. While you may be on the edge of your seat, the characters in the film make some baffling choices throughout.

The cast of Night Always Comes, led by Vanessa Kirby, can help keep you invested as more bad choices are made, but they really add up by the finale. Among all the head-scratching moves made, here are the six worst decisions that characters in Night Always Comes make:

Lynette’s Mom Buying The Mazda

Night Always Comes quickly establishes that Lynette, her mother Doreen, and her brother Kenny, who has Down syndrome, have been struggling to provide for themselves amid the rising costs of living. However, at the beginning of the film, Lynette has a plan in place to put a down payment on their home. This will not only provide them with some security but will also ensure that Kenny doesn’t get taken away.

Lynette and Kenny plan to meet their mother at their landlord’s office so that they can officially purchase their home. However, Doreen never arrives. Not long after they arrive back home, Lynette’s mother pulls up to the house in a brand-new Mazda. Turns out, she used the check that was meant for the down payment to purchase the car instead.

At the end of Night Always Comes, Lynette realizes that her mom never wanted to buy the house because she didn’t want to live with her anymore. However, when she first sees the car, she is understandably furious. Her mother’s seemingly reckless purchase means that they can no longer buy the house and Kenny may get taken away.

Given the stakes, Doreen buying a Mazda instead of a house is a real surprise. She may have her reasons for it, but in the mind of Lynette – and many viewers – this is a decision that doesn’t make any sense.

Lynette Stealing Scott’s Car

Desperate to figure out a way to keep the house, Lynette reaches out to Scott, a married man whom she has been sleeping with for several months in exchange for money. Scott isn’t interested in investing in the property and scoffs at her misfortune, but Lynette still makes $1,000 for sleeping with him.

After they hook up, Lynette is so furious that she steals his high-end Mercedes and takes it on a joyride through the city. However, she quickly regrets this decision and decides to abandon the car. It was already reckless of her to steal the car, but abandoning it is even more baffling. Since she desperately needed $25,000, Lynette might have been able to leverage the car for more of Scott’s money.

She could have potentially threatened to reach out to Scott’s wife if he didn’t pay her more. Overall, this car presented a lot of opportunity, but Lynette never properly utilized it. Instead, she left the keys for Cody later in the movie.

Gloria Letting Lynette Stay In The Apartment

After she abandons Scott’s car, Lynette visits one of her best friends, Gloria, in the hopes that she has the $3,000 that she owes her. Unfortunately, Gloria only has $500 to give her, but Lynette watches her unlock her politician boyfriend’s safe. ᴀssuming there’s more money in the safe, Lynette decides she needs to break into it.

Lynette asks Gloria if she can stay in her apartment while she’s leaving for dinner. Gloria doesn’t question her at all and agrees. Even though Gloria is a minor character in Night Always Comes, this decision likely had a major impact on her life going forward.

Most likely, her boyfriend would have blamed her for the safe being stolen. There’s a chance that Gloria’s life will fall apart because of Lynette’s actions. Overall, it was very unwise to let Lynette stay in the apartment, especially since she was clearly desperate for money.

Lynette Trusting The Safe Breakers

Unable to break into the safe herself, Lynette reaches out to Cody. He helps her sneak it out of the apartment and bring it to one of his friends’ homes. From the moment Lynette walks into the house, it’s clear that she’s uncomfortable. However, she still chooses to trust Cody’s connection, who breaks the safe open with a sledgehammer.

Inside the safe, they find about $19,000 in cash, a Rolex, and a few bags of cocaine. Lynette ᴀssumes that she’s going to take everything from the safe and leave, but clearly Cody’s two friends are going to cause problems. From the outset, Lynette never should have agreed to take the safe to a stranger’s house. She should have ᴀssumed that they would ask too many questions and potentially want what was inside for themselves.

Predictably, a fight breaks out at the house. Lynette and Cody manage to get away with everything that was in the safe. However, if she had thought the situation through better, Lynette could have avoided ending up in such danger.

Lynette Not Questioning Cody More

When Lynette needs help getting into the safe, she immediately thinks to ask Cody since she knows he served time in prison. However, it needs to be stressed that Lynette and Cody barely know each other. Therefore, it makes no sense for her to be so trusting of him throughout the movie.

About halfway through the movie, Cody offers Lynette $4,000 for Scott’s stolen Mercedes. She agrees since that’s exactly what she needs to reach her $25,000 goal, but this quickly backfires on her. While Cody shows her a bill before they drive to the Mercedes, she doesn’t check further to confirm he has all the money. When they make it to Scott’s car, Cody decides that he wants to take all of her money.

To stop him from doing this, Lynette needs to run Cody over with her car. However, this hostile situation could have been avoided if Lynette hadn’t been so trustworthy. She should have reminded herself that she didn’t actually know Cody and been a bit more guarded, rather than blindly trusting him.

Lynette Bringing Kenny Into The Party

Towards the end of the film, Kenny joins Lynette on her mission to get $25,000. To get the last $4,000 that Cody lied to her about, Lynette decides to sell the cocaine from the safe. She visits an old boyfriend, Tommy, who sets up a sale. Lynette and Kenny drive to a mansion and walk into a party.

However, Lynette should have recognized that she was potentially walking into a very dangerous situation and insisted that Kenny wait outside. While Lynette tries to orchestrate the sale, Kenny wanders off. Therefore, when things take a turn for the worse, she is forced to charge through the house to look for her brother.

Thankfully, Lynette and Kenny both make it out of the house alive, but things could have ended up a lot worse. They would both have been safer if he had stayed outside. Kenny wanting to be there for his younger sister is a sweet sentiment, but Lynette should have known better here and throughout Night Always Comes.
