After Peacemaker Season 2, I Have Way More Hope For A 2026 DCU Movie

Peacemaker season 2 has convinced me that a major DCU movie in 2026 will hit the mark. Peacemaker season 2’s story is certainly intriguing, given that it is both a standalone adventure and the next chapter in the franchise. Since the ending of Superman, James Gunn has reiterated Peacemaker season 2’s importance in the latter sense.

Even beyond when Peacemaker season 2’s cast will appear again or how the story continues the DCU’s overarching narrative, the show includes several elements that will impact the wider franchise. One of these elements is the show’s tone, which could have a bearing on upcoming DC movies. One movie in particular is coming in 2026, with Peacemaker making me all the more excited for it.

Peacemaker Season 2 Proves How The DCU Will Have Tonally Different Properties

What becomes immediately evident with Peacemaker season 2’s tone is how the DC Universe will incorporate some wildly different properties under the same banner. James Gunn has long insisted that this is the plan, with each project emulating the style and tone of the filmmakers involved, as opposed to being toned down via studio mandates.

When looking at Peacemaker and Superman, this is extremely evident. Both projects were created by Gunn himself, but Superman was a much more family-friendly superhero adventure. It had its darker moments, but overall, it kept things light and hopeful as Superman is supposed to be.

Peacemaker season 2 is very different. For instance, it is much more comedic in the way Gunn’s projects tend to be, which was somewhat toned down for Superman. Then there are the heavily R-rated aspects of Peacemaker, from the violence and gore to the Sєx, nudity, drug use, and cursing.

Superman was a PG-13 movie that, while not without its more mature moments, was mostly suitable for children and adults alike to watch. The same cannot be said for Peacemaker, with Gunn proving just how committed he is to making each DCU project feel tonally original and unique from the last.

Peacemaker Season 2 Makes 2026’s Clayface Even More Promising

With the tonal differences between Peacemaker and Superman in mind, I am more excited than ever for 2026’s Clayface. The movie is being directed by James Watkins, the filmmaker behind 2024’s Speak No Evil remake. The story was also written by Mike Flanagan, an illustrious horror filmmaker from the last decade or so.

James Gunn has insisted that Clayface will be a body horror movie that leans into the darker, scarier aspects of its тιтular character. In any other scenario, one could be forgiven for ᴀssuming this was an empty promise from a studio head to get people to watch. Kevin Feige’s promise that Moon Knight will stretch the MCU’s levels of brutality springs to mind, for instance.

However, after Peacemaker season 2, I am certain that Flanagan and Watkins will be given free rein to craft a genuine DCU horror movie. Peacemaker has proven how different the stories of the DCU can be. With Flanagan being somewhat of a modern horror auteur and Watkins familiar with the genre, Clayface is gearing up to further fulfill Gunn’s promises, and I could not be more excited.
