Star Wars’ New TV Show Will Show The Death Star’s Destruction From A Stormtrooper’s Perspective

Star Wars: Visions season 3 is set to revisit the Death Star’s destruction from a whole new perspective. The Death Star was supposed to be the key to Palpatine’s reign, a weapon of such power that nobody would dare oppose the Empire. Until Luke Skywalker fired “the sH๏τ heard across the galaxy,” that is.

The Death Star instead became Palpatine’s greatest folly. It wasn’t just that a mᴀssive amount of time and resources had been invested in the superweapon; some of the Empire’s best and brightest died there as well, including Grand Moff Tarkin, who Palpatine believed could have won the Galactic Civil War.

Now, at last, we’re about to see the destruction of the Death Star from the Empire’s point of view.

Star Wars: Visions Is About To Give Us A New Look At The Death Star’s Destruction

Star Wars Visions Volume 3 Black

Star Wars: Visions is a unique anthology series, with each episode created by a different animation house. Visions is generally non-canon, meaning the animation houses have absolute flexibility to exercise their imaginations. Writer and director Shinya Ohira’s BLACK, which combines stunning imagery and music, promises to be the most unusual to date.

We wanted to offer a film that was mainly based on Sakura Fujiawara’s singing voice set against these visuals of intense battles. That was our vision as we made the film,” Ohira explained in a pre-recorded video released at Anime NYC (and published by Lucasfilm). The result is an exploration of a stormtrooper’s twisted psyche as the Death Star is destroyed.

There’s Never Been Anything Quite Like BLACK

BLACK in Star Wars Visions Season 3

This is the beauty of Star Wars: Visions; it’s an opportunity for the best animators to flex their creative muscles and tell Star Wars stories that are a little more… unusual. Ohira is a veteran artist from Akira (1988), Spirited Away (2001), and Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), and he served as character designer and key animator for BLACK.

We really got down into some fine details for this film,” Ohira explained. “There’s the Death Star…. The setting is really super detailed, and the stormtroopers, drawing out the action in the battle scenes, it was really quite an arduous task for the animators. So that was painful, but it was worth it, and the end result really speaks for itself…. It’s really kind of something nobody’s ever seen before.

Visions is undoubtedly one of the best Star Wars TV shows of all time, simply because of that opportunity – that chance to show viewers something we have never seen before. BLACK promises to be an exciting chapter in an eagerly-awaited show.

Star Wars: Visions season 3 releases on October 29.
