Margot Robbie Addresses Harley Quinn Return In James Gunn’s Revamped DC Universe

The return of Harley Quinn in the DC Universe has been addressed by Margot Robbie. Robbie has so far played the iconic DC Comics character three times in live-action, in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, all of which were part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

The DC Universe (DCU) is a newly launched franchise that is a soft reboot of the DCEU. The live-action branch of the new franchise began with 2025’s Superman, in which David Corenswet stepped in to portray the тιтular superhero, who was previously played by Henry Cavill in the DCEU. The ongoing Peacemaker season 2 is the DCU’s follow-up live-action installment.

During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan while promoting her new movie A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Margot Robbie discussed her potential future in the DCU. When asked if she would be reprising her role as Harley Quinn, Robbie said that “she’d be a fun one to revisit,” but implied that no such return is currently planned.

No, I haven’t actually [been asked about Harley Quinn] yet [today]! She’d be a fun one to revisit too. She’s so fun to play.

What This Means For The DC Universe

While Margot Robbie could be playing coy and hiding a surprise cameo in an upcoming DCU movie, it seems likely that she has not yet been approached to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the movies that are currently in development as part of the franchise’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters.”

So far, there have not been many DCEU characters who have returned in the DCU, as played by the original actors. These have been limited to the core cast of Peacemaker, which includes John Cena in the тιтle role (who also had a cameo in Superman).

While other actors are set to reprise their roles, including Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the franchise has also recast a number of characters. In addition to Superman, this includes Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan, formerly Amy Adams), Perry White (Wendell Pierce, formerly Laurence Fishburne), and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo, formerly Michael Cᴀssidy).

While Harley Quinn has not yet appeared in live-action in any capacity, it remains unknown if the intention would be to approach Robbie to reprise her role or to recast the character entirely, should she return.

Our Take On Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn Comments

There are two good signs that Margot Robbie could return as Harley Quinn in the DC Universe. The first is her enthusiasm for doing so. The second is the fact that Harley was a character in The Suicide Squad, the movie from which Peacemaker is spun off, so there would be a natural entry point for the character to return.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
