New Mystery Thriller Starring Riz Ahmed & Lily James Sits With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

The mystery thriller genre has undergone a quiet renaissance in the last few years. Previously, it was limited to whodunits and formulaic noirs, but this has been revitalized with Rian Johnson’s Knives Out film series. However, the mystery thriller has also expanded, blending psychological depth with character studies in things like 2023’s Sharper and The Pale Blue Eye.

Riz Ahmed has also become an understated but certified star, carving out a space in modern cinema as an intense, cerebral performer with range through indie dramas like Sound of Metal and elevated genre works like Nightcrawler and Encounter. Meanwhile, another emotionally complex performer, Lily James, has transformed from a period-piece darling into a versatile actor, balancing mainstream appeal with darker material.

The new mystery thriller, Relay, currently holds a 78% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on early reviews. The film was released theatrically on August 22 and stars Riz Ahmed as a professional fixer called Tom who brokers payoffs on behalf of corrupt corporations, with Lily James portraying a potential client called Sarah, who may need his protection.

David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) serves as director, with Sam Worthington, Matthew Maher, and Victor Garber appearing in supporting roles. Relay had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024. Before its release, Justin Piasecki’s screenplay, which was previously тιтled The Broker, was featured on the 2019 Black List of unproduced scripts.

While some critics have noted the narrative occasionally leans into clichés, the majority of reviews are positive, praising Relay‘s taut direction, tension, and the chemistry between its leads. Ahmed’s surprisingly emotionally vulnerable performance draws eyes in particular, showcasing a layered character, while James stands out in a role that walks the line between ally and adversary.

For a mystery thriller movie, especially one not based on pre-existing IP, a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes is a promising sign for audiences on Relay‘s theatrical release day. Although its Tomatometer is not exactly on the high end, Relay‘s score means the film is at least “fresh,” indicating that critics’ responses are mostly positive, even if the film isn’t universally praised.

In a crowded landscape where genre films often struggle outside of franchises or big spectacles, a grounded, performance-driven thriller receiving this level of early acclaim could translate into strong viewership. It also positions Relay as a potential sleeper hit, especially considering Ahmed and James’ previous accolades. Therefore, Relay could be another sign that mystery thrillers aren’t just surviving, they’re actually thriving.
