Ana De Armas & Sydney Sweeney’s New R-Rated Thriller Falls Short On Rotten Tomatoes Ahead Of Release

The new thriller starring Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney has received a tepid reaction from critics. Both actors are stars with major hits under their belts.

While Sydney Sweeney is perhaps best known for her small-screen roles in HBO’s hit dramas Euphoria and The White Lotus, as well as Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, she has more than established herself as a movie star with 2023’s Anyone But You. The romantic comedy, which co-starred Glen Powell, grossed $220.3 million against a reported budget of $25 million.

Several Ana de Armas movies have made even bigger splashes following her English-language breakout in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. This includes the James Bond movie No Time to Die ($758.9 million), in which she played a supporting role, and the franchise-launching smash hit whodunit Knives Out ($312.9 million), in which she played a lead opposite Daniel Craig and Chris Evans.

Eden’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Underwhelming

2025’s Eden has fallen short of greatness with its Rotten Tomatoes score. The new movie, which was directed by Ron Howard, is a survival thriller about a group of people attempting to settle on a remote island in the Galápagos whose disagreements threaten their already delicate situation.

In addition to Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas, the star-studded ensemble cast of the movie includes Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s Jude Law, The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ Vanessa Kirby, and Captain America: Civil War‘s Daniel Brühl.

Rotten Tomatoes has aggregated 55 different critics’ reviews of the movie ahead of its theatrical debut on August 22. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, the majority of these reviews have been mixed to negative, giving Eden a Rotten score of 58%, falling 2% below the 60% threshold past which a movie can be deemed Fresh.

What This Means For Eden

Eden marks the first Rotten score for a Ron Howard-directed film since 2020’s Hillbilly Elegy (20%), but it continues an overall negative streak for two of its female leads. During the decade to date, 10 Sydney Sweeney moves have received Rotten Tomatoes scores and six were Rotten, including Madame Web (10%) and Anyone But You (53%).

Ana de Armas has had an even worse streak than Sydney Sweeney, with seven of her nine 2020s movies earning Rotten scores, including Blonde (43%), The Gray Man (45%), and Ghosted (24%). While it seemed like Eden could provide both of them with critical redemption, this won’t be the case unless a slew of new positive reviews are added.
