Following Honey Don’t!, there is one more movie to go in the planned lesbian B-movie trilogy with recurring lead actress Margaret Qualley. Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke planned to make three such campy movies, so far materializing as 2024’s Drive-Away Dolls and 2025’s Honey Don’t!, both of which put lesbian characters in the lead roles in adventures that riff off classic genre tropes.
Drive-Away Dolls is a road trip gone wrong movie, while Honey Don’t! is a detective murder mystery. Talking about the informal trilogy’s development, Cooke said that when she and Coen didn’t have any other work to do: “I was like, okay, well, why don’t we […] try writing some genre movies there? You know, there aren’t enough lesbian genres, maybe.“
During ᴅᴇᴀᴅline’s Crew Call podcast, Coen and Cooke talked about the final movie in the informal trilogy, and confirmed that they hope to have Qualley star again. Coen said that the next movie they hope to make will follow “a ten-year reunion of a women’s crew team. Wilderness. They, you know, row down the river, which is life. You get it?” “Yea, meets horror movie,” said Cooke.
Qualley plays one of the co-leads of Drive-Away Dolls and the тιтular character of Honey Don’t!, so the writer-director duo was naturally asked if she would return. Coen said that Qualley will be “too old” for what they have in mind as the lead role by the time they make the movie, but that they will “find a part for [her].“
What This Means For Honey Don’t! & The Lesbian Genre Trilogy
Neither Drive-Away Dolls nor Honey Don’t! have had an amazing critical reception, perhaps due to the nature of the films Coen and Cooke set out to make being campy and easy to misread. However, Drive-Away Dolls certainly has its defenders, and so will Honey Don’t!, and fans will be eager to see the trilogy’s conclusion with another cult classic in the making.
As the previous two installments have utilized classic plots and tropes, the third movie in the series needs a recognizable premise, and wilderness horror is an excellent choice. Regarding Qualley potentially being demoted to a supporting role, she will still probably steal the show in every scene she’s in, and at this point, just needs to be there to tie all the movies together.
Our Take On Ethan Coen & Tricia Cooke’s Trilogy’s Conclusion
It could be a great change of pace for Qualley to play a supporting character in the next movie, as it would cement the throughline of her presence throughout the trilogy, but would mix things up for the final installment. Qualley would also be fantastic as some kind of villain as the horror movie premise unfolds.
My biggest concern is that it sounds like this movie is still in early development, potentially not even confirmed yet — Drive-Away Dolls and Honey Don’t! came out only a year apart, so now it will be jarring for the series to go on a longer hiatus. But this hypothetical horror movie’s predecessors suggest that when it does hit theaters, it will be a wonderful, wild ride.
