A new Audible story, set after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will tell the first new Rey story in six years. The sequel trilogy era has been largely unexplored since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘s release in 2019, with recent comics finally telling Kylo Ren’s story between The Last Jedi and his death. Now, Rey is about to get the same treatment.
Lucasfilm Press has announced a new Star Wars audiobook, “The Jaws of Jakku,” which will release on Audible on October 9. Written by Cavan Scott and featuring narration by Helen Sadler, it’s set in the immediate aftermath of The Last Jedi. Here’s the official synopsis:
Following the events of The Last Jedi, Rey struggles to let go of her lonely childhood on the desert planet of Jakku. Hoping to have a breakthrough in her Jedi training, she returns to her home world with Finn and BB-8 in tow. When they meet a young girl on a dangerous mission to save her family, they travel through pitch-black tunnels beneath the sand where they encounter scurrying gnaw-jaws, a haunting terror from the past, and maybe—just maybe—hope for them all.

Writing in his newsletter, Cavan Scott teased that this is an unusual story; it’s told in the first person by a young girl on Jakku, someone with first-hand experience of the desert planet’s most famous resident. You can listen to an absolutely delightful preview over on Audible.
Star Wars Is Finally Telling Rey’s Missing Story
The sequel trilogy didn’t exactly land as planned, and Lucasfilm has since been reluctant to explore that part of the Star Wars timeline. All that changed with this year’s Star Wars: Legacy of Vader series, by Charles Soule, Nolan Woodard, and Luke Ross. This ongoing series is set after The Last Jedi, and it’s telling Kylo Ren’s story.
That naturally led to intense speculation about whether Rey would receive the same treatment. There’s a largely-unexplored year between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, in which Rey began to train as a Jedi under Princess Leia. But “The Jaws of Jakku” is taking a rather unexpected direction – one that may be quite important.
Rey’s Return To Jakku Could Help Set Up Palpatine’s Return
Jakku is a lot more important than most viewers realize. Chuck Wendig’s “Aftermath” trilogy revealed the planet was one of Palpatine’s hidden observatories, and there were even hints Palpatine loyalists attempted to perform a ritual that would resurrect him there. It’s entirely possible Rey will stumble on clues to Palpatine’s Rise of Skywalker return.
Star Wars may have largely avoided the sequel era since 2019, but tie-ins have gone to great effort to fix Palpatine’s resurrection into the canon and lore. Rey’s unexpected Star Wars: The Last Jedi sequel could well be another step along that journey.
