Warning! This article contains minor spoilers for Peacemaker season 2, episode 1.
The DC Universe has confirmed that an iconic Batman location exists within the franchise. Since Superman officially kick-started the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, it became evident just how wide-reaching the franchise would be from the start. Several heroes already exist, with some having been active for centuries, and Superman confirmed several DC Universe locations, including Gotham City.
Upcoming DC movies will only continue to flesh out the universe. Be it through the introduction of Themyscira, Atlantis, and several other iconic DC Comics locations, or the inclusion of major villains like Clayface, the confirmed projects of the next few years will truly solidify the world of the DC Universe.
The follow-up to Superman has already begun to do exactly this. Peacemaker season 2’s story is set in the DC location of Evergreen, all while delving further into the idea of the multiverse. Moreover, an iconic Batman location has been confirmed for the DC Universe.
Peacemaker Season 2 Confirms Arkham In The DC Universe
The location in question is Arkham Asylum. In the world of DC Comics, Arkham Asylum is the psychiatric hospital in Gotham that houses a great number of Batman’s most iconic villains, from Joker and Scarecrow to Mr. Freeze and the Riddler, to name only a few. In Peacemaker season 2, Arkham’s inclusion in the DC Universe is confirmed.
One scene in Peacemaker season 2, episode 1 highlights a newsreel in which the reporter is speaking about several Metahuman breakouts. The reporter can be heard stating that several Metahumans have escaped from Belle Reve, the prison featured in both The Suicide Squad and Creature Commandos, and Arkham, linking to Batman’s mythos.
What Arkham Existing In The DC Universe Means
As already alluded to, Arkham’s existence in the DC Universe is big for the franchise. For one, it means that Batman’s activity in the DCU is reinforced after his cameo in Creature Commandos. The idea that enough Metahumans were in Arkham to warrant a big escape shows how illustrious Batman’s career has been in the franchise before his official debut.
Beyond that, it also sets the foundation for several DC villains to be included going forward. I have already mentioned some, but Batman villains like Killer Croc, Hugo Strange, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy have all been linked to Arkham to differing extents. With Peacemaker season 2 establishing Arkham as a big location in the DCU, the basis of these villains’ stories has been teased.
Aside from setting up some big villains, Arkham’s inclusion in Peacemaker season 2 simply furthers the worldbuilding of the DCU. As I mentioned before, Arkham’s reference makes it clear how the DC Universe has a lot of history, despite Superman being the first official story in the franchise. Peacemaker only continues that via the mention of Arkham, solidifying the wider world of DC heroes and villains.
