Super Troopers 3 Gets Exciting Filming Update, Cast Includes Returning Alum & The Boys Star

Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers has received a major filming and cast update. It will be the third installment in the long-running franchise, which stars the members of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske) as Vermont State Troopers who have a variety of wacky adventures.

The upcoming Super Troopers 3 has been in the works for some time, as it was originally announced shortly after the debut of 2018’s Super Troopers 2, which itself came many years after the release of the original movie in 2001.

Now, Variety reports that production is about to commence on Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers. The Broken Lizard team members are returning, with Jay Chandrasekhar also directing, as he did for the first two movies. Filming is set to begin this week.

Returning cast members Brian Cox and Marisa Coughlan, who both appeared in the two original Super Troopers movies, are also set to reprise their roles as Captain John O’Hagen and Ursula Hansen respectively. They will be joined by new cast members Andrew Dismukes as Coy Burns, Nat Faxon as Captain Todd Markowski, and Chace Crawford as Baker Buchanan.

Below, read comments on the announcement from Searchlight President Matthew Greenfield and Jay Chandrasekhar, in which the latter implies that it has been confirmed that the movie will be premiering in theaters:

Matthew Greenfield: Broken Lizard has been part of the Searchlight family for over two decades, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for another entry in the Super Troopers saga. Super Troopers has a way of making the absurd feel inevitable, and we can’t wait to bring audiences along on another adventure with these characters who leave a trail of joy and laughter, wherever their patrols may take them.

Jay Chandrasekhar: Broken Lizard is excited to help bring the theatrical comedy back. To America, we say, “It’s mustache-growing time!”

In addition to reuniting the core cast of the franchise, Super Troopers 3 has ᴀssembled a group of incoming stars that should serve the wacky comic universe of the franchise well. Andrew Dismukes, for instance, has broad comedy experience as a cast member on Saturday Night Live.

Andrew Dismukes became a part of the SNL ensemble in 2020 after joining the sketch show as a writer in 2017.

As a member of the cast of The Boys, Chace Crawford similarly has experience in pushing the envelope with comedy, as the show boasts a variety of edgy, humorous moments. Additionally, while this is Nat Faxon’s first Super Troopers outing, he has previous Broken Lizard experience, having appeared in several of their movies, including Club Dread, Beerfest, and The Slammin’ Salmon.

In addition to seemingly confirming that the new Broken Lizard movie will come to theaters, Jay Chandrasekhar’s comments about reviving the theatrical comedy underscore the fact that production on Super Troopers 3 is beginning at the perfect time. While many recent comedy movies have gone straight to streaming, the tide is beginning to turn.

Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers will be arriving in theaters in the wake of the Liam Neeson-led comedy reboot The Naked Gun, which has already grossed more than $75 million worldwide, becoming one of the splashiest pure comedy releases of the decade and proving that there is a path for absurd comedy to connect with modern theatrical audiences.
