Famous Wizard Of Oz Story Becomes Horror Slasher: First Images & Release Date Revealed

The timeless adventure that is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz gets a horrifying twist in first-look images from the new film, Wicked of Oz. The slasher film is directed by Aaron Mirtes and reimagines the fantastical Land of Oz as a brutal, blood-soaked nightmare, where familiar characters like the Tin Man and Glinda aren’t guides, but killers instead.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline has just released the first images for Wicked of Oz, which showcase Dorothy Gale trapped in a savage land, facing death at every turn. Written by Mirtes with Nathan Illsley based on a story by James Cullen Bressack and Scotty Mullen, the upcoming slasher stars Kenzie Wynne as Dorothy, Chelsey Fuller as Glinda, and Patrick Sharn as The Wizard. Check out the images below:

According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the horror flick will feature a cannibalistic Glinda, a skull-cracking Scarecrow, a heart-collecting Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion who is not so cowardly. In Wicked of Oz, Dorothy must fight her way through Ooze with scavenged weapons until she faces the Wicked of Oz. The film is in post-production and is aiming for a November release.

What This Means For Wicked Of Oz

Wicked of Oz is the latest in a growing trend of public domain reinterpretations that turn beloved childhood tales into gruesome horror films. Following the success of projects like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey and Bambi: The Reckoning, this new wave of horror is all about subverting nostalgia and twisting stories that once brought comfort into something deeply disturbing.

The use of practical effects, grotesque creature designs, and slasher tropes suggests the film is leaning into its premise without irony, offering genre fans something both familiar and completely reimagined. Furthermore, with Wicked of Oz aiming for a November release, it puts the film in compeтιтion with the upcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, utilizing clever marketing to increase its popularity.

Our Take On The Wicked Of Oz Slasher

Turning something like The Wizard of Oz into a full-blown slasher is undeniably bold. The recent slew of public domain horror movies has been somewhat divisive. For purists and fans of the classics, they’re a desecration of childhood staples. But for fans of slashers, the upcoming Wicked of Oz movie might just scratch the itch for daring, genre-bending cinema.

Wicked of Oz‘s success will ultimately depend on how well it balances horror with homage. If it commits to its twisted tone while delivering a compelling survival story, Wicked of Oz could become a cult hit. Yet, even so, sometimes there are just movies that are so bad that they are good, and I, for one, am certainly interested.
