Archie Comics is heading to the big screen as a new movie is in the works. In the ever-growing comic book and superhero adaptations across TV and film, Hollywood has mostly focused on DC and Marvel properties over the last two decades, but that may be about to change, as Archie Comics is looking to make a jump to the world of cinema.
Universal Pictures is developing an Archie Comics-related movie from Spider-Verse’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller. DC Comics scribe and DC Studios architect Tom King is set to write the script for the project, which currently doesn’t have an official тιтle.
As of right now, it has not been confirmed if the Archie Comics movie will be live-action or animated. The movie development comes two years after Riverdale, a darker live-action take on the Archie Comics franchise, ended its run on The CW. Lord and Miller gave the following statement about the unтιтled Archie Comics movie:
We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences — both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen.
What Is The Archie Comics Movie About
At the time of this story’s publication, there are no story details about the Archie Comics movie, but presumably, it will likely feature classic players like Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead. It wouldn’t be shocking if the project ends up being animated, given the success that Lord and Miller have had with the Spider-Verse movies.
Since the Archie movie is likely going to be more in line with the tone of the comics, having it in animation would also allow Universal Pictures’ film to stand out from the Riverdale seasons. Based on Lord and Miller’s statement, the theatrical adaptation will be something that new audiences can get introduced to while also pulling in longtime readers.
Given how Archie Comics has been reimagined over the years, there are many directions that this new film could go in, whether it pulls from stories such as Afterlife with Archie or Chilling Adventures with Sabrina (which was also the inspiration for the Netflix TV show of the same name). It wouldn’t be shocking if the Archie Comics movie is a mixture of focus on both the iconic triangle drama and fantastical adventures.
Our Take On The Archie Comics Movie
With the deep mythology that comes with Archie Comics, it will be intriguing to see how the film adaptation will do, especially in terms of tone. The fact that an Archie Comics movie is now being developed only a few years after the Riverdale ending is fascinating, given how Hollywood has never had these characters on the big screen.
If the Archie Comics movie ends up being animated, the possibilities will be endless for Universal Pictures, especially if they intend to make this an ongoing film franchise. Hopefully, more details on the Archie Comics movie will emerge sooner rather than later.
