James Gunn Has A New Update On DCU’s Green Arrow Since Superman’s Release

The status of Green Arrow in the DC Universe franchise finally gets an update from James Gunn. As the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is just getting started, numerous DC heroes and villains are being introduced in Gunn’s superhero reboot across several movies and TV shows from DC Studios.

While characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are huge priorities for DC Studios, there are many other Justice League figures that fans are hoping to see make their way into the DCU. One of them is Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow, who never got his due in the DCEU movie timeline.

During the latest episode of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn addressed whether Green Arrow is actually canon in the DCU at this point. While Green Arrow is mentioned in Peacemaker season 1, Gunn shared the following on the Emerald Archer’s current DCU status:

I don’t know, I’m not willing to say yet. We don’t really know. We don’t have Green Arrow as part of our system right now. So maybe he exists, maybe he doesn’t.

While Green Arrow’s future with the DCU may not have been determined, it makes sense that Gunn isn’t necessarily focusing on Oliver Queen for the time being. The DCU timeline has just begun, following the release of Superman, as Peacemaker season 2 is set to arrive this month.

Even if a Green Arrow movie or TV show isn’t in the works, that doesn’t mean the character couldn’t show up in someone else’s project down the line. But from Gunn’s comments, figuring out Green Arrow’s place in the franchise is not a priority for the time being.

Bigger characters like Batman and Wonder Woman are currently the priorities for DC Studios, with both of their solo movies in the writing stages. Whether Green Arrow gets introduced during Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” or in a future chapter remains to be seen.

While it may be disappointing to hear that Green Arrow’s DCU path is nebulous at best, Oliver will more than likely get his time to shine in the budding franchise. As Green Arrow has a solid record in live-action TV shows like Smallville and Arrow, it’s time to get him on the big screen, too.

Adding Green Arrow to the DCU is also another way for Gunn’s franchise to stand out from the DCEU, given how the character didn’t show up once during its run. Once Green Arrow is introduced in the DCU, it will also open the door for many of his allies and villains to be properly added to the franchise. Hopefully, Gunn will have exciting updates about Green Arrow in the DC Universe in the near future.
