Coolie has landed in the Top 10 in the United States. The new Tamil-language movie stars Rajinikanth as Deva, a man who is unwaveringly committed to revenge, no matter what it takes. It was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chandhru Anbazhagan.
After debuting on August 14, the movie has already become a global success. Worldwide, it has earned ₹404 crore (roughly $464.2 million), making it the highest-grossing Tamil-language movie of 2025 so far and the third highest-grossing Indian movie of the year in general, behind Saiyaara (₹561.90 crore) and Chhaava (~₹809 crore), which are both Hindi-language тιтles.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Coolie earned a 3-day total of $2.45 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office. This was more than enough for it to land at No. 10, making it the only non-English movie on the domestic chart alongside Hollywood тιтles such as F1 The Movie, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, Superman, The Naked Gun, Freakier Friday, and Weapons.
Coolie managed this feat in spite of the fact that it faced compeтιтion from multiple new English-language releases. However, only the action sequel Nobody 2 debuted above it, at No. 3. It was nevertheless able to outrank the Spike Lee and Denzel Washington collaboration Highest 2 Lowest, the Sydney Sweeney crime drama Americana, and the horror remake Witchboard.
What This Means For Coolie
It is not altogether uncommon for Indian movies to debut in the bottom half of the Top 10 at the domestic box office, especially in the wake of the тιтanic critical and commercial success of 2022’s RRR, which became the third highest-grossing Indian movie in history at the time and won an Oscar for Best Original Song.
RRR is now the fourth highest-grossing Indian movie worldwide, behind 2024’s Pushpa 2: The Rule, 2017’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and 2016’s Dangal.
However, what makes Coolie‘s appearance on the domestic chart so remarkable is the fact that it is only the second Indian movie to debut on the domestic Top 10 during the summer movie season, which is typically dominated by major Hollywood blockbusters.
It was preceded by Kuberaa, which debuted at No. 10 on the weekend of June 20, the same weekend when Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and Pixar’s Elio premiered. However, before that, the most recent Indian movie to debut in the domestic Top 10 was HIT: The Third Case, which landed at No. 9 on the weekend of May 2.
Our Take On The Coolie Box Office
The box office success of Coolie could indicate an impending resurgence in Indian тιтles on the domestic chart, now that the summer movie season is drawing to a close and the box office is entering its usual period of doldrums, with only a scattering of major releases due before the holiday season begins to ramp up.
