New Action Movie With John Wick Vibes Hits A Major Box Office Milestone

Timo Tjahjanto’s Nobody 2 certainly delivers John Wick vibes, and audiences are responding in kind. The sequel continues the story of Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) and his family, as Hutch deals with the consequences of destroying a Russian bank. The film received positive reviews in its first week, with Nobody 2 earning a 77% Tomatometer.

The Nobody franchise, which began with 2021’s hit film, has carved out its niche among modern action staples. However, Nobody still parallels the John Wick series, which is expected when the two franchises share a creator in Derek Kolstad. Now, the latest box office figures suggest the Nobody franchise is stepping out of John Wick‘s shadow in a particular way.

According to data provided by The Numbers, Nobody 2 has officially crossed the $15 million milestone at the global box office, 0.6 times its $25 million production budget. The sequel earned $9.25 million in its opening weekend, following its debut on Aug. 15, and currently has a domestic box office of just over $10 million.

What This Means For Nobody 2 & The Franchise’s Future

While Nobody 2‘s box office figures may pale in comparison to blockbuster franchises, considering the gritty action sequel has fairly modest origins, a $15 million worldwide box office is a significant feat. However, even with a relatively low $25 million production budget, grossing $15 million in its first week means Odenkirk’s sequel still has ways to go before it breaks even.

Yet the performance of Nobody 2 seemingly reaffirms audiences’ appeтιтe for stripped-down, choreography-heavy action films with lone-wolf protagonists and minimal CGI. It also positions the Nobody series as a viable mid-budget alternative in an era dominated by superhero and blockbuster action flicks. Consequently, the sequel’s success could open the door for a potential Nobody 3.

Our Take On Nobody 2’s Box Office

Nobody 2 hitting $15 million globally might not seem particularly worthy news on paper, but in the context of today’s market, especially for original IP, it’s a genuine achievement. For something like another installment of Kolstad’s John Wick, you might expect a much higher box office result. However, that is because there is a larger staple action franchise behind it.

Yet, Odenkirk’s film is significantly more niche. The Nobody franchise doesn’t just borrow from John Wick, it reinterprets it through a different lens: a quiet family man drawn back into the fire. While Nobody 2 may have a tough time at the box office, if it does well enough and is praised by those who see it, the series could still solidify its own legacy in modern action cinema.
