Marvel’s $57M Box Office Failure Becomes Netflix Global Hit 20 Years Later

A Marvel movie is surging in the Netflix charts to become a global hit two decades after its initial release. With the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it became common to see Marvel films dominating the box office. For the better part of its existence, the franchise has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, becoming immensely successful.

It is true that in recent years, multiple MCU movies have struggled at the box office, with even a few hits underperforming, which happens when high expectations are set. However, the MCU is still more consistent than some of the releases prior to its creation, which included a few box office flops. That said, one of them has found new life.

A new update from Netflix’s Tudum reveals that Elektra has entered the Global Top 10 chart. This is the Marvel movie’s first week in the chart, with Elektra being the 7th most-watched movie in the world. The Daredevil spinoff surged on the streamer with 5.1 million views and 8.2 million hours viewed for the week of August 11–17.

Elektra‘s new life on streaming is surprising. The Marvel movie’s impressive feat comes 20 years after it was released in 2005. Back then, Elektra failed to connect with audiences in theaters. The Daredevil spinoff holds a disappointing 11% Rotten Tomatoes score, with the film only managing to finish its global theatrical run with a box office set at $56.8 million.

There are conflicting reports about Elektra‘s budget, which is said to have been in the $43-65 million range, but either end of that projection would mean the film lost the studio millions when marketing costs are added to the equation. As such, it is quite a surprise that Elektra is climbing Netflix’s global charts 20 years later.

The movie ranks above Kandahar, Fixed, and Despicable Me 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10. At the top of the chart is KPop Demon Hunters, which is currently Netflix’s second most-watched movie of all time with 210.5 million views and 350.9 million hours viewed. The film is on track to surpᴀss Red Notice and take first place on Netflix.

While Elektra might not be as successful as KPop Demon Hunters, the fact that a 20-year-old Marvel flop can still find new life on streaming and surge on Netflix’s charts is impressive. That is likely aided by the fact that Jennifer Garner’s Elektra recently returned to the big screen in Marvel Studios’ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine.

The MCU movie grossed $1.3 billion globally, with Garner’s Elektra receiving more praise this time around than when her solo movie was released. With that newfound appreciation for her version of the character and the fact that not a lot of viewers saw Elektra when it was first released, it makes sense that the film has become a Netflix hit.
