James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Runs Past Disney’s Oscar Winner In Their All-Time Charts

Superman has pᴀssed a major Disney movie in a key highest-grossing chart. James Gunn and the new DC Universe are off to a solid start when it comes to the franchise’s theatrical side. Superman might not have come close to the coveted $1 billion mark, but the movie never had to reach that lofty goal, no matter some negative chatter.

As Gunn previously revealed, he would be happy if Superman were to make back its budget. With its production costs reportedly set at $225 million, the DCU’s first movie needed to finish in the $450-562.5 million range, which it has already exceeded. That opens the door for Superman to chase higher spots in box office charts — with a profit guaranteed.

According to The Numbers, DC’s Superman movie has pᴀssed Disney’s Zootopia in the all-time domestic box office chart. Domestically, Superman is now looking at a $341.5 million total so far, which sees the Man of Steel fly higher than the Disney animated movie’s respectable $341.3 million. With Superman now out on digital, its box office run should start to slow down.

What Superman Pᴀssing Zootopia At The Domestic Box Office Means

Superman continues its dominant run at the domestic box office. James Gunn’s latest DC movie is now at 78 in the all-time domestic box office chart. The next film on its path is another superhero entry, Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder, which Superman is set to pᴀss. However, how much more it can climb is currently up in the air.

With Superman now on digital, it stands to be seen how its box office legs will be affected. It is possible that pᴀssing Zootopia‘s domestic box office might be one of the final major milestones the DC Universe movie collects in its theatrical run. If that does end up being the case, then Superman‘s latest feat was a good one to secure.

Zootopia is a perfect example of what Superman could have been in a way. While the DC movie has flown past its domestic total, Disney’s Oscar-winning animated feature cleared the $1 billion mark globally, with Superman grossing 595.2 million so far. David Corenswet’s Superman needed the strong international performance that Zootopia had, and DC now knows where to work on.

Zootopia is one of the most successful animated movies of the past decade, which is why a sequel, Zootopia 2, is coming later this year. As such, Superman surpᴀssing Zootopia‘s domestic box office is an exciting milestone for the DCU movie. With its VOD release, all signs point to the Man of Steel slowing down.

However, flying past Zootopia‘s domestic box office shows that Superman could still climb up a few more positions in the highest-grossing charts before its theatrical run is over. With positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth, Superman still has a sH๏τ at gaining more positions in key charts over the next few weeks.
