Marvel Studios Surprisingly Leaving Key Location After X Years For Major Reasons

Marvel Studios is moving its film operations out of Georgia to Pinewood Studios in the UK. Since the 2014 Ant-Man, Marvel has been filming most of its interior shooting in Georgia. The state is known for its production-friendly tax credit. In 2008, Georgia expanded its tax credit to a maximum of 30%, an act that attracted many entertainment production companies.

Since then, the state has seen a boom in its entertainment sector. Many blockbusters were filmed in Georgia, including The Hunger Games, Stranger Things, and the Fast & Furious franchise. Disney’s Marvel also accounts for a significant proportion of revenue in Georgia’s film industry.

However, beginning with this year’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the studio is making Spider-Man: Brand New Day and two Avengers movies at Disney’s lot outside London to reduce its production costs. Several factors, including cheaper labor, not being required to pay for workers’ health insurance, and Georgia’s rising costs, all contributed to the move.

What This Means For Georgia’s Economy And Marvel Studios

It’s worth noting that many movies in recent years have been filmed in the UK. The Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie‘s production took place extensively at Warner Bros. Studios’ lot in Hertfordshire, north of London. While exterior scenes were filmed in Los Angeles, the majority of the production was done in the UK. The film alone added £80 million to the UK’s economy.

With a Marvel movie production budget averaging around $190 million, moving the majority of its operations out of Georgia would mean mᴀssive job losses and a noticeable decline in production spending.

Our Take On Marvel Studios Moving Out Of Georgia

Georgia was nicknamed the “Hollywood of the South” due to its prosperous film and television industry. Marvel’s departure has a direct impact on local jobs. Since the labor strikes, Hollywood has yet to recover fully to its pre-strike levels. Many families working within the entertainment industry have faced hardship and were forced to look for other opportunities.

Meanwhile, the UK is experiencing a surge in productions. From the scheduled Harry Potter television series to the upcoming Marvel movies, the country is on the path of becoming a major international hub for film and TV.
