Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 features a dark Star-Lord moment that puts one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best scenes in a new light, making it harder to rewatch. As the only human member of the MCU’s cosmic team, Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord has been at the forefront of their adventures in Marvel Studios’ fan-favorite Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
However, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 focused on Rocket Raccoon, leading to one of the MCU’s darkest and most emotional movies yet. After a tragic succession of events, the team won, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s ending saw the superheroes disband, with most going their separate ways. Star-Lord’s darkest scene comes from that, and it affects a key MCU moment.
Avengers: Infinity War Changed The Game For Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn directed the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and a holiday special for Marvel Studios before he went on to work on his 10-year plan for the new DCU at DC Studios. While he had some involvement in the Infinity Saga’s final Avengers movies, Gunn was not their director. That role fell to the Russo Brothers, who have returned.
They will helm the MCU’s next two Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars. When they were working on Infinity War and Endgame, the Russos, who entered the MCU through the Captain America franchise, had to figure out how to use characters from all over the MCU in a way that made it work for Thanos’ quest. Gamora was key to that.
As his beloved daughter, Gamora made for the perfect sacrifice in order for Thanos to get the Soul Stone. While it worked for the Avengers movies, the decision deeply affected the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Gunn has revealed that he always had plans for Gamora to die, but it not happening in a Guardians movie was likely not part of them.
Chris Pratt’s Darkest Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Scene Comes At The End
After Gamora dies in Avengers: Infinity War, we see how much that absolutely crushes Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. He is so out of control with rage to the point that he repeatedly hits Thanos in the worst possible moment, as it weakens Mantis’ hold on him and leads to the Mad тιтan blocking the MCU heroes from taking the Infinity Gauntlet from him.
Interestingly, Marvel found a way to keep Gamora alive. A version of her from the past — taken from before she met Star-Lord and joined the Guardians of the Galaxy — stays in the present. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 plays a lot with that relationship, as we see how Peter Quill tries to make the new Gamora see that they belong together.
However, due to their different backgrounds, the Gamoras are two very different characters in key ways. By the end of the film, it is made clear that while a special bond continues to hang in the air when it comes to Star-Lord and the new Gamora, they will not be together. Their goodbye scene, talking about how they were fun, is heartbreaking.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’s Sweetest Moment Is Now Hard To Rewatch
After that tragic end to their relationship, with the original Gamora dying and her new version not ending up with Star-Lord, I believe that one of the MCU’s best scenes is now hard to rewatch. That would be the sequence where we see Peter Quill and Gamora dancing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
While their relationship was slowly built over in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the dance sequence takes things a step further for the duo. Star-Lord directly questions Gamora about their relationship, talking about the “unspoken thing” between them. All of that is set to a slow dance under a gorgeous, colorful alien planet backdrop. It’s quite romantic.
When it started to get real, Gamora pulled away. They have a brief argument that includes Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord telling her that he finally found his family — meaning Ego, his father — and she responds with “I thought you already had.” It’s a gripping sequence that showcases their love in different ways. However, the trilogy’s finale just makes watching it tragic.
Star-Lord Could Find Love Again After A Major MCU Team Debuts
While Gamora and Star-Lord are both still in the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s ending makes it clear that the door is closed on their romance. However, that does not have to mean Peter Quill will never find someone to spend the rest of his life with. Star-Lord has had a few notable relationships in the comics.
My favorite of those could finally come true in the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel Studios has already announced that several actors from Fox’s X-Men movies will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. After the end of the Multiverse Saga, the MCU X-Men movie, which will be directed by Thunderbolts*‘s Jake Schreier, will have the mission of rebooting the Marvel team.
With Marvel announcing Star-Lord’s return, that could include Chris Pratt staying in the franchise after Avengers: Secret Wars. With the X-Men debuting, the road would be clear for Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde to date. The characters have similar playful personalities in the comics, with both being daring adventurers. After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Kitty is Star-Lord’s perfect match.
