Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper 2 may take things in the same direction as the John Wick franchise. Updates about The Beekeeper 2 have been more frequent as of late, thanks to the director’s promotion for Nobody 2. In the time since the film’s release, The Beekeeper has become a streaming success due to its energetic action and Statham’s lead performance.
Another reason for this, though, is its status as a John Wick clone. Since John Wick‘s release in 2014, several movies have followed the plot of a retired ᴀssᴀssin who is drawn back into the game due to an emotional connection. The Beekeeper is no different, with Statham’s character Adam going back to his roots after his neighbor was caught in a phishing scam.
The ending of The Beekeeper sets up a sequel in the way John Wick did, by hinting at a deeper world of ᴀssᴀssins and the rules they play by. With The Beekeeper 2, then, the franchise is expected to delve into exactly that. Moreover, a recent update about the film’s production hints that The Beekeeper 2 is continuing its John Wick similarities in one key way.
The Beekeeper 2 Might Have A More International Story, Just Like John Wick 2
The similarity in question is taking the story of The Beekeeper 2 global. The first movie was set predominantly in Mᴀssachusetts, with Statham’s Adam hunting down his enemies in locations like Springfield and Boston. The first John Wick movie was similar, with the entire movie being set within New York City.
With The Beekeeper 2, however, this is set to change. The director of the upcoming sequel, Timo Tjahjanto, has provided updates about The Beekeeper 2‘s filming locations during press events for Nobody 2. Tjahjanto revealed that he was in London scouting locations for filming, implying that The Beekeeper 2 could partly take place in the English capital.
Not only could this hint at The Beekeeper 2 exploring Statham’s backstory as Adam Clay, but it also confirms the story of the sequel will be international. What exactly Clay will be facing in the sequel is unknown, but the expansive filming locations may prove that the story is taking place outside of Mᴀssachusetts.
This emulates John Wick – Chapter 2, which took its тιтular character on an international adventure. A large portion of John Wick – Chapter 2 takes place in Rome, Italy. The sequence sees John trying to ᴀssᴀssinate a character named Gianna, leading him into conflict with several of her bodyguards, including Common’s Cᴀssian.
In this way, The Beekeeper franchise is continuing to parallel John Wick. It seems as though The Beekeeper 2 will explore Adam Clay’s past, with the director also commenting on how he wants to explore more of the absurd world of secret ᴀssᴀssins, much like the John Wick sequels did. For these reasons, and The Beekeeper 2‘s international story, the John Wick comparisons will continue.
