The Conjuring: Last Rites will be the fourth and final entry in the long-running horror franchise, detailing the final real-life case of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. There are some very high expectations riding on this sequel to conclude the series in a powerful and meaningful way, given just how popular the Conjuring movies and their spin-offs have been.
Although Last Rites will just miss the peak summer window with its September 5 release date, audiences should still expect a strong box office performance from the horror sequel. The franchise has notoriously done very well in the past, and while this won’t technically be the end of the Conjuring movies, it has the added benefit of being the final installment in the main series.
Warner Bros. Needs The Conjuring: Last Rites To Open High To Extend Ongoing Box Office Record
Warner Bros. has recently broken a major box office record, becoming the first Hollywood studio to have six consecutive movies make over $40 million on their opening weekends. This is a huge accomplishment, and it clearly highlights just how strong the studio’s slate has been this year. With projects including A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Superman, Warner Bros. is clearly leading the charge in 2025.
The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the studio’s next theatrical release, so it faces a lot of pressure to maintain this strong commercial performance and ensure Warner Bros. doesn’t lose their streak. Given just how popular the Conjuring Universe has been in the past, it’s definitely possible that Last Rites could pull together the necessary $40 million.
The Conjuring and its sequel grossed $40 million and $41 million on their opening weekends respectively, so there’s no reason to believe that Last Rites won’t accomplish the same feat (via Box Office Mojo). The only time a main series movie has fallen short of this target was in 2021, when The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It pulled together just $24 million.

However, this has to be considered in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its low performance, The Conjuring 3 still had the third-best opening weekend of that period and remained at the top of the international charts for several consecutive weeks. Although spin-off movies like Annabelle tend to come just short, the main franchise always seems to do well.
Although some box office projections for Last Rites suggest it will just fall short of the $40 million mark, there’s clearly an interest in this franchise, and audiences shouldn’t count it out just yet. The sequel will also be the movie to make The Conjuring a billion-dollar franchise, as Last Rites needs just $200 million at the worldwide box office to reach this milestone.
