This ’90s Cult Classic Is Basically An Episode Of Supernatural In Movie Form

There is a cult classic from the 1990s – The Prophecy – that has a strong similarity to the early seasons of Supernatural. The former CW hit show was about two brothers protecting the world from demons and monsters. The overall mythos of Supernatural was a war between Heaven and Hell, with angels and demons in constant battle.

In 1995, a horror movie was released that had a very similar theme to the earlier seasons of Supernatural, which was more concerned with the different angels and demons battling each other for the future control of Earth. In the Gregory Widen movie, The Prophecy, the Archangel Gabriel arrives on Earth, looking for an evil soul.

The Prophecy’s Premise Feels A Lot Like Supernatural’s Earlier Seasons

Fans of Supernatural know about the Archangel Gabriel, who in the TV series was a trickster, similar to Loki, and the youngest of the Archangels. He was nothing like his older brothers, especially Michael and Lucifer, who were intent on battling each other, even if it destroyed all of Earth. Gabriel, in The Prophecy, is neither of those character types.

However, The Prophecy plays out a lot like an early-season Supernatural episode. That is because an angel arrives on Earth and ends up working with a human, in this case, a police detective named Thomas, played by Elias Koteas. They end up involved in a civil war in Heaven that threatens to destroy Earth.

This is very similar to shows like Supernatural, where God disappears, so the angels take matters into their own hands. While Lucifer is still a threat from Hell, Michael, the greatest of the Archangels, is almost a villain, and the civil war in Heaven plays a significant role in both The Prophecy and Supernatural.

There is also a significant aspect of the story’s possible outcome: if the war continues, it could turn Heaven into another Hell, and Earth would pay the price. Plus, even the good angels can’t be trusted. While Thomas is no Dean or Sam Winchester, The Prophecy could fit in well with any number of Supernatural’s early-season stories.

Good News: The Prophecy Has An Entire Franchise To Delve Into

This was also only the start of The Prophecy. The movie was the start of a franchise that ended up with five total movies, released from 1995 to 2005. Shockingly, Christopher Walken returned as Gabriel for the first two sequels, although the franchise replaced Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer in later films.

Later movies even added some more familiar faces, with Eric Roberts and musician Glenn Danzig joining in The Prophecy II as Archangels Michael and Samayel, and Jason London arriving in The Prophecy: Uprising as the voice of Simon. Also joining the franchise were Tony Todd (Candyman) and Doug Bradley (Hellraiser).

The movies continued the idea that rogue angels from Heaven wanted to prevent the apocalypse and the arrival of the Antichrist, for the simple reason that they wanted to retain control, which are the exact themes and motivations for the various angels in Supernatural, making the entire The Prophecy franchise look like a possible influence on the CW series.
