Jurᴀssic World Rebirth Positions The Franchise To Repeat Its Biggest Villain Problem

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has kicked off an all-new era of the Jurᴀssic saga that can learn from the mistakes of the previous trilogy. Rather than featuring Owen and Claire, the movie instead follows a group of smugglers who go to an InGen test site to steal DNA from the island’s biggest dinosaurs.

By the end of the film, the characters have successfully gathered the DNA and escaped the island. Instead of giving it to ParkerGenix as agreed upon, however, they decided to release it to the public, allowing everyone to benefit from potential medications.

This completes the main character’s thematic journeys, but it also sets up some consequences for a sequel. No confirmed plans for a Jurᴀssic World Rebirth 2 have been announced yet, but that hasn’t stopped the franchise from already being put in a familiar trap.

Jurᴀssic World Doesn’t Need Another Evil Medical Company After BioSyn

Based on the ending of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, ParkerGenix’s return is an obvious choice for a sequel. If the franchise wants to continue following Scarlett Johansson’s Zora and Jonathan Bailey’s Henry, it is likely that a sequel would see ParkerGenix attempt to get revenge for their betrayal, hoping to reclaim the dinosaur DNA that they were sent after.

This would set the pharmaceutical company up as the overarching antagonist of the new series. Unfortunately, this is far too close to the ending of the previous trilogy. Jurᴀssic World Dominion is all about BioSyn, an evil medical company that has been mentioned in the Jurᴀssic Park books but didn’t fully debut until the 2022 film.

In Dominion, BioSyn Genetics is run by Lewis Dodgson, with the company claiming that it researches dinosaurs for medicinal purposes. However, the characters discover that Dodgson has a true plan to use genetically enhanced locusts to create a famine and allow BioSyn to control the world’s food supply. The plan is foiled, and Dodgson and the company are taken down.

This BioSyn storyline received a lot of criticism upon Dominion‘s release. Firstly, because of how ridiculous the plan was. Secondly, and more importantly, it is similar to other Jurᴀssic plots. InGen has been at the center of most of the other films’ stories, and introducing another evil genetics company seemed like an unnecessary retread of what had already been done.

This same criticism can be levied at Rebirth. ParkerGenix is the franchise’s third evil company that is obsessed with dinosaurs, and the 2025 film doesn’t do enough to differentiate it. It is still a faceless company run by greedy suits who have nefarious plans for the dinosaurs, and the main characters have to fight back against it.

After seven Jurᴀssic movies, the franchise needs to move on from this storyline. ParkerGenix is not interesting, and after failing to create the BioSyn story, future sequels don’t need to revisit this trope.

Jurᴀssic World 5 Needs To Do Something Fresh With Its Villains

In a world where dinosaurs exist, there are so many other possibilities for villains outside of evil companies. Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom went in the right direction by highlighting illegal dinosaur auctions. Dominion‘s dinosaur fighting rings were also a cool idea, although this concept was barely explored.

Rebirth 2 has plenty of options to choose from. For example, the movie could follow the protagonist smugglers as they face off against a more nefarious group of dinosaur thieves. A group that uses dinosaurs for terrorism could also be interesting, as the idea of the animals being used as weapons was already explored in Jurᴀssic World‘s militarized raptor storyline.

Another unique option would be to bring back the concept of human dinosaur hybrids. This idea was pitched for the original version of Jurᴀssic Park 4, and while it still hasn’t been used in any of the films, it is an idea that fans frequently come back to. A rogue scientist could have figured this technology out, or it could be an unforeseen consequence of human testing with Rebirth‘s possible cures.

There are all kinds of unique villain ideas that the Jurᴀssic movies haven’t explored, and if the movies get a little more creative, they can finally move away from the evil corporation trope. While it can be done right, BioSyn and ParkerGenix are far too generic, making for uninteresting antagonists that are nothing more than less-interesting copies of InGen.

Obviously, genetics corporations have to play a role in the franchise, as they are the ones who create the dinosaurs. However, sticking with InGen is enough. This way, a sequel to Jurᴀssic World Rebirth can keep this aspect, introduce something new, and not have to worry about introducing another evil faceless corporation into the lore of the franchise.
