David Corenswet’s Batman & Superman Crossover Comment Makes The DCU’s Future Even Brighter

David Corenswet’s latest comment about the prospect of a Batman and Superman crossover makes the future of the DC Universe look even more exciting. The debut of the DCU’s Superman has been a major turning point for DC’s movie empire, and one that has also stoked the fires of excitement regarding what the franchise’s other big heroes will be like.

Naturally, one of the most discussed upcoming DCU heroes is that of Batman, who has been one of the superhero genre’s most beloved figures throughout the decades. With the prospect of a DCU Batman and Superman crossover being a major hope since day one, Superman actor David Corenswet’s comments on the prospect have understandably excited plenty of fans.

As the first main flagship hero for the franchise, David Corwenswet’s role as Superman is of natural importance to the DC Universe timeline. This makes it all the more promising to note that he appears to be one of the people most enthusiastic for a DCU Superman and Batman crossover.

Superman‘s behind-the-scenes Adventures in the Making of Superman video underlines this perhaps best with one segment of its look at the filming of the movie. During a team cheer, Corenswet playfully chants “1, 2, 3 – Batman!” before stating, “…I’m just trying to end up in that movie, I really want to be in that movie.

While a more joking reference to the prospect of a Batman and Superman DCU crossover, it’s one that naturally reignited fan excitement and theories around the idea. This makes particular sense given David Corenswet has previously also supported the idea of the pair’s paths crossing soon, stating in a July interview with ExtraTV that:

As soon as [Superman] finds out that there’s a man who dresses as a bat protecting his city, it’s like, ‘I want to go check that guy out.'”

With James Gunn having additionally playfully teased that “We don’t know he hasn’t already seen a man dressed as a bat,” the potential for the two iconic DC heroes to appear side-by-side on-screen seems more rife than ever. Luckily for David Corenswet, his Superman also seems especially perfect to pair up with the DCU Dark Knight.

Superman and Batman are two of DC’s three biggest heroes – with the third being Wonder Woman – and, as such, their crossovers are legendary both in the pages of comics and on-screen. That said, the main live-action movie to have focused on this – Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice – proved a controversial DC movie because of how it explored this territory.

While it made a lot of sense for the DCEU’s darker tone to be reflected in the less cheery initial interactions between the Man of the Steel and the Caped Crusader, Superman‘s depiction of its hero sets up a very different dynamic for the DCU heroes.

As a hero who considers his humanity his best trait, Corenswet’s Superman seeing a hero who embodies sheer willpower and the human spirit – even without powers of his own – is likely to sell him on Batman immediately. Similarly, Superman’s existing alliances with the likes of the Justice Gang may tee him up to want to team up with Batman.

Notably, it has been repeatedly teased that the DC Universe will feature Superman and Batman’s wider families, which sets up an even more fascinating dynamic between these two heroes and their respective groups as well. The prospect of Corenswet’s chirpy hero alongside a brooding Batman is entertaining enough alone, but the prospect of them discussing parenthood is even better.

James Gunn’s Superman Saga Comments Mean A Batman Crossover Could Be A Perfect Live-Action Debut

As one of the cornerstones of DC – and one of the most popular superheroes of all time, often arguably beating out Superman in this regard – the importance of bringing Batman into the DCU is paramount.

However, it’s not clear how soon his live-action debut could be, since The Brave & The Bold is seemingly in early development, and it’s thought there will be efforts to make sure it doesn’t overlap or release too closely to Matt Reeves’ The Batman movies, with The Batman 2 currently set for a 2027 release.

As such, the best route to ensure audiences get to see the Dark Knight prior to The Brave & The Bold itself may be capitalizing on the success of Superman and the Superman sequel project that’s underway. James Gunn has revealed the next project in the “Superman saga” has a finished treatment, suggesting it could come to fruition beforehand, stating:

I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the Superman Saga. The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.

With the Superman saga seemingly set to expand further into the wider Superman mythos, and people clearly enthusiastic to see Batman make a more substantial appearance than in Creature Commandos – including David Corenswet himself – having the two families appear in some capacity side-by-side could play nicely into setting up The Brave & The Bold.

This would provide a major scene that fans have been theorizing about since the DCU was announced, and link the two heroes together nicely. Such a moment would also make The Brave & The Bold more exciting for viewers, since the story is reportedly set to feature Batman’s son Damian Wayne, who could perhaps be best teased here.

Similarly, this could perhaps work to ensure David Corenswet’s hopes of appearing in a Batman movie are easier to make reality, and that the DC Universe as a whole is more clearly intertwined. For now, though, all that’s clear is that the Superman star is just as excited as the rest of us for Batman’s movie future.
