The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is imminent, and here are 10 scenes from the animated original that I cannot wait to see. The ending of How to Train Your Dragon faithfully adapted the final moments of the original 2010 movie, with Hiccup and Toothless uniting the dragons and Vikings of Berk.
Surprisingly, the movie did not set up a sequel, despite the post-credit scene in How to Train Your Dragon. Nonetheless, a sequel has been confirmed for June 2027, based on 2014’s How to Train Your Dragon 2. The story of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will follow on from the first movie, featuring Hiccup and Toothless’ continued adventures.
As with the first movie, the changes in How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s remake will likely be minimal, meaning some iconic moments from the original sequel will remain in the remake. With that in mind, here are 10 particularly meaningful moments from How to Train Your Dragon 2 that I cannot wait to see adapted into live-action.
10
Dragon Racing
The opening scene of the original How to Train Your Dragon 2 establishes what Berk looks like five years after the end of its predecessor. The way it does so is via Dragon Racing, a sport invented by Hiccup and his friends. This scene is vibrant, fast-paced, and features some solid worldbuilding for the sequel, and I cannot wait to see it in live-action.
The flying and action scenes in 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon were very well-handled, meaning the same can be expected for the sequel. With the added colors and compeтιтiveness of Dragon Racing, How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s live-action remake could get off to an exciting start.

Hiccups & Toothless’ Adventures
As someone who holds the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy in incredibly high regard, one of the most feel-good, heartwarming scenes in How to Train Your Dragon 2 is Hiccup and Toothless’ flight sequence. Set to the track “Where No One Goes” by John Powell and Jónsi, the scene perfectly captures the spirit of the series and its two main characters.
Seeing this in live-action, like the first movie’s “Romantic Flight” or “Test Drive” sequences, is something I cannot wait to experience. The scene is beautiful in the animated movies, and I have every faith that Dean DeBlois will capture that same beauty in How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Even beyond that, the scene is great at establishing where Toothless and Hiccup are as characters. The latter is mapping out the world with the former by his side, leading to the expansion of the lore that leads to the sequel’s main story.
8
Drago Bludvist’s Flashback
One of the more chilling moments in How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the flashback involving Drago Bludvist. Drago is the film’s main villain and has a history with Stoick, which this flashback showcases. The flashback is done with a strange animation style as Drago’s words echo around Stoick’s retelling of the story, making it almost scary in nature.
The flashback is overly effective at setting up Drago as How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s main villain and needs to be part of the live-action. I cannot wait to see this adapted, as it would allow Dean DeBlois to depict the hazily animated, echoey nature of the flashback in live-action, potentially allowing for a unique scene with a different audiovisual style.
7
Valka’s Introduction
Valka’s introduction to How to Train Your Dragon 2 is, like Drago’s, one of the film’s most unique sequences. It begins with the eerie spotting of Valka soaring through the clouds before Hiccup and Toothless are separated. The visuals of Valka’s dragons acting as torches is beautifully haunting, before the scene turns on its head as Valka recognizes her son.
This leads to the exploration of Valka’s home, the reveal of the Bewilderbeast, and a series of bonding scenes between her and Hiccup. All of these elements are some of the most important aspects of How to Train Your Dragon 2. They feature some stunning animation, amazing music, and lovely character moments, explaining why I cannot wait to see them in live-action.
6
Stoick & Valka’s Dance
Perhaps the most beautiful moment in How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes after Stoick and Valka reunite. Stoick sings Valka their wedding song, leading the two to dance as Hiccup and Gobber watch on. The scene is tender and loving in a way a lot of animated movies rarely are, allowing How to Train Your Dragon 2 to stand out from the crowd.
Seeing this in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a must. Gerard Butler, who plays Stoick in both animation and live-action, is excellent in the role, and seeing him be so emotionally vulnerable will be amazing. Alongside whoever is cast as Valka, amid hints of Cate Blanchett’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 return, the scene could be iconic.
5
The Battle Of The Bewilderbeasts
The turning point in How to Train Your Dragon 2 is when Drago and his army invade Valka’s home. This leads to an epic battle between good and evil, alongside a Kaiju clash between two Bewilderbeasts, and some heartbreaking character deaths. If done right, this could be the most breathtaking part of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2.
The increased scale of the live-action remakes could allow for the battle to be depicted in a way it was not in the original movie. The tone of the first remake was slightly darker than that of its animated counterpart, and the same could be true with the sequel. If so, the battle could be shown in much more depth.
The clash between the Bewilderbeasts could be visually stunning, especially after the depiction of the Red Death in the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon. When adding the shocking twists to this, it makes sense why this climactic scene is one I cannot wait to see in live-action.
4
Stoick’s Funeral
One of How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s most emotional moments is Stoick’s funeral. The scene is beautifully animated, with Stoick’s flaming boat heading into a sea of fog as John Powell’s music blares out. The tragic speeches from Hiccup and Gobber make the scene all the more upsetting, though it remains one of the film’s absolute best scenes due to its emotional impact.
For these reasons, Stoick’s funeral is a scene I, admittedly begrudgingly, cannot wait to see in How to Train Your Dragon 2. Stoick’s death is key to the central character arcs of the film and propels the narrative into its final act. This makes his funeral all the more important and, if done with the same emotional intimacy, should be a key part of the remake.
3
Hiccup Freeing Toothless
Another emotional moment in How to Train Your Dragon 2 is Hiccup freeing Toothless from the Alpha’s mind control. Hiccup’s reᴀssurance that Toothless was not at fault for Stoick’s death is a heartrending gutpunch, making the euphoria at Toothless breaking free and reuniting with Hiccup all the better.
Based on how important this scene is to the final act, I cannot wait to see it depicted by Mason Thames and the CGI version of Toothless. The first film nailed the dynamic between the two and, with the sequel expected to deepen their bond via some of the aforementioned moments, this scene will be emblematic of their friendship like no other.
2
Toothless Challenging The Alpha
One truly epic moment in How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes when Toothless enters his blue-glowing, somewhat super-powered state. He does this to save Hiccup from the Alpha Bewilderbeast’s ice blast before challenging the giant dragon. Toothless defeats the Bewilderbeast and becomes the Alpha of the dragons.
In terms of sheer excitement and hype, this scene is one I need to see in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. It develops Toothless’ character mᴀssively, all while serving as the climax of the film. The framing of the powerful underdog taking on a giant is excellent, and the scene could be suitably epic if adapted correctly.

How To Train Your Dragon 2’s Ending
If the How to Train Your Dragon movies have anything in common, it is that they all have great endings. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is no different. The film ends with Hiccup as the chief of Berk and Toothless as the Alpha of the dragons, with the two vowing to protect their way of life against anyone who threatens them.
2025’s How to Train Your Dragon adapted the ending sequence of Hiccup and Toothless’ flight perfectly, so I cannot wait to see the sequel do the same. This sequence is arguably even more impactful than the first, thanks to How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s emotionally resonant story. With that in mind, I am excited to see how this scene, among others, plays out in live-action.
