The Naked Gun has pᴀssed a major box office milestone after just two full weeks in theaters. The new movie is a legacy sequel to the comedy trilogy of the same name and stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s original character, Frank Drebin.
The Naked Gun release kicked off on August 1 with a middling $16.5 million debut that saw it premiere at No. 3 behind the fellow new release The Bad Guys 2 at No. 2 and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps at No. 1. Nevertheless, the comedy quickly rose to become Liam Neeson’s highest-grossing movie of the decade.
Per The Numbers, at the end of its 14th day in theaters, The Naked Gun reached a cumulative global box office total of $60.6 million, comprising $37.2 million at the domestic box office and $23.4 million from international markets. This makes it the 35th movie of the year to pᴀss the $60 million milestone worldwide.
What This Means For The Naked Gun
In addition to being one of a select number of movies to have hit the $60 million milestone throughout the year so far, 2025’s The Naked Gun has cemented its status as the third highest-grossing live-action comedy movie of 2025 at the time of writing, behind only Materialists ($65 million) and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy ($140.1 million).
The gap between the Liam Neeson movie and the next lowest-grossing live-action comedy movie of 2025 (not counting Freakier Friday, which is en route to pᴀssing the $60 million milestone itself during its forthcoming sophomore weekend) is nearly $10 million, as that тιтle is the Keke Palmer movie One of Them Days, which earned $51.9 million.
One of Them Days itself is more than $10 million above the next highest-grossing live-action comedy on the 2025 global chart, which is Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme ($39 million). This underscores just how rare it is for a movie like The Naked Gun to reach a major milestone like this in the modern era.
Our Take On The Naked Gun Box Office Milestone
One potential hurdle for The Naked Gun is the fact that it comes with a relatively sizable reported budget of $42 million. While its exact break-even point is unknown, movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in order to turn a profit in theaters, which could place its break-even point as high as $105 million.
However, while The Naked Gun may not be able to hit that milestone in theaters, its glowing reviews (88% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 74% audience score) and outstanding box office performance (on the scale of a modern comedy, at least) should help boost its eventual VOD and streaming revenue, pushing it over the edge.
