James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Soars Past Two Of DC’s Biggest Hits To Land On Major Top 5 Chart

Superman has landed on an astonishing box office chart. The new superhero movie was written and directed by DC Studios co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker) and stars David Corenswet in the тιтle role opposite Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

2025’s Superman is the first installment in the DC Universe, which is a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe. The DCEU spanned from 2013’s Man of Steel to 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and included more than a dozen movies as well as the live-action television series Peacemaker, which is returning for season 2 as part of the DCU.

Per The Numbers, Superman took in an additional $890,000 at the domestic box office on Thursday. Although this is a relatively small number due to the movie hitting the end of its fifth full week in theaters, it was enough to push Superman to a cumulative domestic gross of $335.6 million.

This sees Superman surging past the domestic totals of both 2018’s Aquaman and 2019’s Joker, which earned $335.1 million and $335.4 million respectively. In doing so, it has landed at No. 5 on the all-time chart of the Top 5 highest-grossing movies based on DC comics at the domestic box office.

The only movies above Superman at the time of writing are The Batman ($369.3 million domestic), Wonder Woman ($412.8 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million), and The Dark Knight ($534.9 million). Because Wonder Woman is the only DCEU movie above it, this also makes Superman the No. 2 domestic movie of its particular franchise.

What This Means For Superman

Although Superman is performing well at the domestic box office, its international grosses make up less than 43% of its overall box office, so it is still behind a number of DC movies on the worldwide chart. In fact, its $586.6 million global total means that it currently stands at No. 11 on that chart.

Superman will almost certainly fall far short of the billion-dollar global hauls of Aquaman and Joker by the end of its run, but its domestic performance is still astounding. Earning a place on that chart is an impressive achievement for a DCEU/DCU тιтle this decade, as the closest any previous 2020s тιтle came was Black Adam‘s $168.1 million domestic gross.

The Superman box office could be a portent that international markets are growing pickier about superhero properties. However, the James Gunn movie’s domestic results show that the DC Universe is still starting off on a strong footing overall, though upcoming тιтles may require wise budget management in order to thrive in a more domestic-focused theatrical market.
